  • If you are new to the world of special education, here are the top 5 things you should do as you begin your journey. 1?? Review current and past assessment data. This helps you understand where the child is currently performing, present and past strengths and challenges, and how to plan for the future. 2?? Review instructional and testing accommodations and modify. If you are a teacher, this list will help you identify how to plan appropriately to meet the needs of the students in your classroom. If you are a parent, this informs you of what should be being implemented to support your child in school. 3?? Develop questions to ask all IEP team members. For new educators, familiarize yourself with team members and ask them about their expertise and ways to collaborate or consult to implement services and supports. For families, ask about each member’s roles and how they plan to provide services, supports, and resources to you and your child throughout the IEP year. 4?? Review IEP goals, objectives, and dates. Knowing specific goals and objectives the student will be working on helps to identify specific targets for the year. Note whether these targets change from year to year. If they stay the same, questions what is being done differently to increase the student’s performance. Also, know when quarterly progress reports will be received and when the next IEP will be held. Evaluate whether quarterly progress is being made and request a meeting if not. 5?? Build positive relationships with all stakeholders. Whether you’re a teacher, parent, or administrator, it’s important to develop positive relationships with everyone involved to ensure everyone is working collaboratively to improve the success and growth of the child.
