We recently brought together patient advocates for a powerful weekend at the Amgen Rare Mindset Forum. We love these takeaways shared by Jim Sliney Jr, RMA, BCPA, a dedicated patient advocate who was in attendance: "Today was the big day. We deconstructed the rare disease mental health challenges and what we, as public servants could do to improve the prospects for rare patients.? Some themes: Being rare is hard. There’s no point denying it.? Being rare isn’t rare. There are 30 million Americans who are rare. Worldwide? 300 million.? Being rare is isolating. Generally speaking, the closer studies look at mental health among rare diseases, the worse it gets.? Being rare is a call. It has brought together some of the hardest working, fiercest advocates I’ve ever met.? Being rare can bring hope. If we lean on each other, collaborate where we can, and push for improvements to quality of life, we can raise up our heads and find hope in one another.? Empowering autoimmune patients to advocate for themselves and others is at the heart of the Autoimmune Community Summit, a virtual two-day summit presented by the Autoimmune Association. Patient Authentic had the honor of conceptualizing and building the inaugural Autoimmune Summit which featured 23 educational and empowering sessions and over 50 autoimmune experts including physicians, nurses, policy experts, and patient advocates. Attendee feedback was exceptional with participants stating they feel "more empowered to be their own advocate" and "felt very seen and heard".
