Have you ever wondered why some people seem to have more influence than others at work? It often comes down to POWER—not just positional authority, but the ability to shape decisions, drive action, and inspire others. One framework for understanding POWER in the workplace is French & Raven’s FIVE SOURCES OF POWER. This model identifies five key ways people gain and use Power: ?? LEGITIMATE POWER – Authority that comes from a formal role or title. ?? EXPERT POWER – Influence based on knowledge, skills, or expertise. ?? REFERENT POWER – Power gained through relationships, trust, and admiration. ?? COERCIVE POWER – The ability to enforce consequences or discipline. ?? REWARD POWER – Control over incentives, promotions, and recognition. ?? INFORMATIONAL POWER – Having access to valuable information that others don’t. ?? The most effective leaders strategically develop multiple forms of POWER to navigate challenges and maximize their impact. While coercion and rewards may work in the short term, expertise, trust, and credibility often lead to the most lasting influence. #WorkplacePower #LeadershipInfluence #ProfessionalGrowth

Do you see POWER as about control, or as something more? Many leaders assume their POWER comes from titles, skills, and experience. But research shows that the most effective leaders don't just exert control—they mobilize energy and commitment from others. ?? According to the Harvard Business Review article A NEW PRESCRIPTION FOR POWER by Elizabeth Long Lingo, PhD and Kathleen L. McGinn, POWER can be: ?? SITUATIONAL – Aligning goals, environments, and resources effectively. ?? RELATIONAL – Building strong networks and coalitions for support and influence. ?? DYNAMIC – Adapting influence strategies as conditions change. Leaders who master all three dimensions are better equipped to navigate challenges, drive results, and create lasting impact. ?? What comes to mind when you think about POWER AT WORK? A title? A corner office? The ability to tell others what to do? While these are common perceptions, true POWER in the workplace is much more than authority—it's the ability to influence, create opportunities, and drive change. In a professional setting, POWER stems from: ?? EXPERTISE & SKILLS – The knowledge and capabilities that make you indispensable. ?? RELATIONSHIPS & NETWORKS – Whom you know and how well you collaborate. ?? REPUTATION & CREDIBILITY – The trust and respect you've built over time. ?? ACCESS TO INFORMATION & RESOURCES – The insights and tools that enable decisions. ? When we cultivate our POWER strategically, we unlock career growth, gain a stronger voice in decision-making, and open doors to leadership opportunities. But POWER is also about uplifting others, fostering innovation, and creating a lasting impact.
