Yesterday Isobel Asher Hamilton wrote about how smart ring company Oura raised $200mn at a $5.2 billion valuation. The CEO, Tom Hale, hypothesized that Apple isn't a threat: “I think they [Apple] are unconvinced about the value of having a ring and a watch together and they’re not interested in undercutting the Apple Watch as a business.” But reporting from our Nat Rubio-Licht shows how Apple has filed multiple patents for smart rings, suggesting the potential it may someday want to enter the market. Today is the end of an era here at The Daily Upside (and the beginning of an exciting new chapter)... After four years, the final issue of Patent Drop has been sent: "The Best of Patent Drop" (linked below for all you fellow patent enthusiasts). What began as Neer Sharma's brainchild was skillfully carried forward in the capable hands of Nat Rubio-Licht. This publication has been a labor of love, digging through hundreds of thousands of patents to bring the biggest developments in Big Tech to light, indicating the direction of our future. My personal journey at The Daily Upside began with the mission of driving growth for Patent Drop and sharing with new readers a newsletter that I personally loved and believed in. Since then, we have seen rapid list growth and editorial prowess as the publication transformed. Now, we pay our respects to Patent Drop and enter a new phase with the rebrand to "CIO Upside", a newsletter built to empower CIOs and IT leaders to drive the next wave of innovation. While I will miss Patent Drop's unique angle and insights, we are confident that this new approach will be a must-read for technology decision-makers (and still have Nat's witty writing behind the wheel). Meta has spent a pretty penny on AI. It may be looking at new ways to cash in. A patent for AI chip architecture from Meta could make model development more robust as it builds AI tools for businesses. The robotic revolution may be coming for data centers.
