Exciting News! We’re thrilled to welcome Northern Pendleton Fire District to our monthly EMS Continuing Education (CE) program! This marks 10 fire departments that have joined our program, strengthening their teams with high-quality, consistent EMS education. Teaching on a budget... A child's bones are like fresh branches - flexible, but not unbreakable. ?? A greenstick fracture, the most common type of fracture in pediatric patients, occurs when the bone bends and partially breaks, just like this branch. When you pick a living branch off a tree and scrape it, you will see a green color. When you try to break it, it's often difficult and only splinters. ???? Remember this the next time you're quizzed on fractures in pediatric patients! ?? www.passwithpass.com #emt #emtstudent #nremt #paramedicschool #medicstudent #emtschool #medicschool #medic #futureparamedic #passwithPASS #nremtp #nremtprep #futureEMT #studentnurse #nursingstudent #emseducation #nclex #nursingstudent #nclextips #nursingschool #passthenclex

?? Mastering the RAAS System: A Quick Breakdown ?? The Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS) is key to regulating blood pressure and blood volume – two elements that are deeply intertwined! Let’s dive in: ?? Renin ?? Origin: Kidney ?? Role: Kicks off the RAAS cascade by converting angiotensinogen ?? angiotensin I. ?? Triggered by: a) Low BP (sensed by baroreceptors in the kidney). b) Low sodium levels in the distal tubules. ?? Think trauma: Hemorrhage, burns, and even chronic conditions like renal disease or CHF can disrupt this system. ?? Angiotensin ?? Origin: Lungs ?? Angio- = Vessel; -Tensin = Tighten ?? Forms: Angiotensin I ?? Converted by ACE enzymes in lungs Angiotensin II: The biologically active form! ?? Effects: Constricts vessels (↑ resistance) and activates adrenal glands to release aldosterone. ?? Aldosterone ?? Origin: Adrenal glands ?? Function: Reabsorbs sodium (and water follows) ?? while excreting potassium & hydrogen. ?? Outcome: Increases intravascular volume, improves venous return, and boosts blood pressure. ?? RAAS in Action The system uses negative feedback to restore balance. But when it’s overactive (like in hypertension), medications step in: ?? ACE Inhibitors: Block angiotensin I ?? II conversion. (e.g., lisinopril, captopril). ?? ARBs: Block angiotensin II receptors further downstream (e.g., losartan, valsartan). ? In conclusion, the RAAS system is vital to regulating BP, fluid balance, and tissue perfusion. From trauma to chronic illness, it’s a system we need to understand to save lives. ?? Struggling with acid-base balance interpretation? We've got you covered! This quick reference chart simplifies the relationship between pH, PaCO2, and HCO3, helping you quickly identify Respiratory and Metabolic Acidosis/Alkalosis. ?? ?? Remember ROME: Respiratory Opposite: pH and PaCO2 move in opposite directions. Metabolic Equal: pH and HCO3 move in the same direction.
