Aside from working with Mainers, a favourite part of our work is our partnerships- in this case with the German Consulate Boston and E2Tech Maine- We had a great panel focused on scalable housing and retrofit approaches with examples from Germany (Bahnstadt and Sinfonia Innsbruck) and the Tree Streets Development in Lewiston, as well as Yard South in South Portland. Great work with very different circumstances. Lots to learn from each other.
Implementing energy-efficient systems is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to combat climate change, to curb carbon pollution and to reduce energy costs for consumers and businesses. Last week, we hosted two thought-provoking discussions regarding the implementation of energy-efficient, low-carbon solutions in urban development, with specific focus on the German “Passivhaus” standard. The first event, “Energy Efficiency in Urban Development,” held in collaboration with the German-American Business Council of Boston, Inc., highlighted the potential and challenges related to architectural and engineering aspects of energy-efficient building standards. The second event, “Design the Future,” featured speakers from Maine and Germany showcasing the whole-neighborhood approach of the “Passivhaus” model, with examples of realized concepts from Germany side-by-side with proposed and underway developments and redevelopments in Maine. Key takeaways: ??For greater uptake of sustainable isolation technology, the process needs to be deskilled to bring down costs. ??There are few incentives to move towards energy-efficient systems as long as energy remains comparatively inexpensive. ??Implementation of energy-efficient practices at the individual level has limited impact compared to government programs and regulation. ???Successful redevelopments of urban environments require a well-thought-out community-input process. Many thanks to John Briggs (Fraunhofer USA CMI), Michelle Lee (BEHNISCH ARCHITEKTEN), Margherita Minissi (Passive House Institute), Amy Smith (Healthy Homeworks), Jennifer Packard Weber (PK Realty Management LLC, Naomi C.O. Beal (phME-passivhausMAINE) and Eric S. Howard, EdD CFRE (E2Tech Maine) for sharing your perspectives and insights! #energyefficiency #sustainability #passivhaus #passivehouse #retrofit

We need art! As we develop the first issue of our passive house journal, we're excited to hear from members of our community about new projects, methods and materials, interesting innovations and practical ideas for Maine homeowners. One thing we need more of: passive house art and design. If you have drawings, drafts, renderings or plans related to sustainable building, building science or passive house, think about sharing them as creative accents and background art for the first issue. Send us a comment or email [email protected] and we'll follow up. #ecoart #sustainabledesign #passivehousedesign #passivehouseart
