In a policy reversal from his last administration,?President-elect Donald Trump campaigned?this time around to cancel the #TikTok ban and ensure the app remains consistently available.?His former advisor Kellyanne Conway?remains a fan of the app, and told? The Washington Post?last week that Trump both “appreciates the breadth and reach of TikTok” and feels that “Democrats are the party of bans.” He’s also praised TikTok as a key competitor to #Meta’s social media platform #Facebook, which Trump famously considers an “enemy of the people.” But just how did we get here, with the government getting ready to enforce a ban on a popular service that Americans clearly like and want to keep around? (Research?published earlier this year by Pew Research Center suggests that around one-third of Americans have personally used the app, a 12% increase since 2021.) To understand the TikTok ban, we have to go all the way back to the year 2020. ?? https://lnkd.in/gpJRUGxG

Performers guild #SAGAFTRA and AI voice model company #Ethovox have come to an agreement, aiming to protect voice actors in the age of #AI. As explained by the guild in a?blog?post on its website, Ethovox is building a “foundational AI model” to produce digital voice replicas. For a model like this to operate, it needs a basis of voice data to work with. However,?according to SAG-AFTRA, the Ethovox model is not user-facing, and the voices included and generated with this model won’t be identifiable. According to SAG-AFTRA, this collaboration “leads the field” in terms of performer compensation. Unlike other AI companies, Ethovox will pay #creators both via session fees and ongoing royalties. How do we feel about this? ?? Comment your thoughts and learn more at the link below. ?? https://lnkd.in/gusyczbc

Performers guild SAG-AFTRA has called for its members to stop working on #LeagueofLegends. The union is claiming that its producer, Formosa Interactive, tried to bypass a strike currently taking place over a different video game produced by Formosa. The union didn’t specify which video game title this was. ?? Formosa Interactive specifically is the arm of Formosa Group that provides League of Legends’ voiceover work. The union claims that Formosa “tried to subvert” its ongoing strike. Allegedly, the publisher did this by attempting to hire non-union performers through a shell company. ?? Consequently, #SAGAFTRA filed an unfair labor practice charge against Formosa. The union did this via the National Labor Relations Board, claiming that Formosa is violating labor laws. Learn more about the union statement and the Formosa Group’s rebuttal ???? https://lnkd.in/gBMH8xY2

People say #GenZ spends too much time on their phones, but do they actually enjoy it? According to a new #socialmedia survey by psychologist Jonathan Haidt, they might not.??? Haidt and his research team, The Harris Poll,?collated?the thoughts of 1,006 18-27-year-olds regarding social media. ? While over 60%?reported?using social media for four or more hours a day, approximately half of them said they wished platforms like #X (50%) and #TikTok (47%) didn’t exist. Meanwhile, 43% of users had similar feelings about #Snapchat, while 37% and 34%, respectively,?said?that they felt that way about #Facebook and #Instagram. By contrast, the smartphone itself and platforms like #Netflix and #YouTube had the lowest regret rates at 21%, 17%, and 15%, respectively. In a?New York Times op-ed, Haidt argued that this data suggests that “if smartphones merely let people text each other, watch movies and search for helpful information or interesting videos (without personalized recommendation algorithms intended to hook users), there would be far less regret and resentment.” ?? https://lnkd.in/dN6fHGGd
