Despite centuries of injustice, oppression, and systemic barriers, Black farmers have persisted—through resistance movements, community care, and innovation ??. While institutions may be rolling back diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice commitments, our collective support for Black farmers doesn’t have to follow suit. In fact, this is the moment to dig deeper—to rethink our strategies, challenge oppressive systems, and build new, people-powered solutions. By shifting our purchasing habits, engaging in mutual aid, advocating for policy changes ??, and uplifting the legacy of Black farmers, we can create a more just and sustainable food system. With the super chilly weather this week, we can't help but reminisce about warmer days. ?? This photo is from one of the three farmer wellness workshops we hosted last year in partnership with Labor Movement and National Young Farmers Coalition. Farmers learned tips on optimal body mechanics and movement patterns to help reduce workplace injuries and extend longevity in a season or a career. In addition to this work, attendees explored self-care strategies, including a yoga session with Lailah Lindsey. It was a beautiful reminder that, just like the land, farmers need to take care of themselves and make time to rest, recharge, and restore. We are reminded that winter has its benefits – it offers farmers a natural pause—an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and focus on personal growth. It’s a season not just for planning next year’s crops but also for nurturing ourselves. Whether that means diving into books, attending workshops, or simply allowing space for rest, winter reminds us that growth doesn’t always happen in the field. ??
