This week, we recognize Joycelyn Elders, the first African American woman to serve as the U.S. Surgeon General. Throughout her tenure, she worked to expand access to healthcare, particularly for marginalized communities. Today, we recognize Helen Brooke Taussig, a pioneering American cardiologist who is best known for founding the field of pediatric cardiology. Born in 1898, Taussig overcame significant personal challenges, including being born with hearing loss, to become one of the most influential figures in medicine. Taussig’s contributions to pediatric cardiology revolutionized the treatment of congenital heart diseases and saved countless lives. She also worked to improve heart health education and the understanding of heart defects. Throughout her career, she faced and overcame numerous obstacles, including prejudice against women in the medical field, but she left a lasting impact on medicine and was highly regarded for her work in both research and clinical practice. During #WomensHistoryMonth, we celebrate the lives of #WomenHealthcarePioneers who broke barriers and drove bold change to contribute to the quality, availability, and affordability of healthcare. This week, we recognize Lillian Wald. As a nurse and social worker, Lillian Wald founded the Henry Street Settlement in New York, which provided free healthcare, education, and social services to immigrants and the poor. She also played a key role in advocating for public health nursing and improving healthcare for underserved communities. Wald's work was instrumental in creating a model for community health that prioritized accessibility and affordability.
