Universe Juice, Inc. is a nonprofit dedicated to reuniting individuals affected by traumatic incidents with the first responders who played a critical role in their care. Last week, Universe Juice kicked off a public safety campaign in collaboration with the Union Fire District of South Kingstown to encourage people to keep fire extinguishers in their vehicles. Fire extinguishers can be picked up at the Union Fire District office on Asa Pond Road in South Kingston. March 19 marks St. Joseph’s Day, a feast celebrating the patron saint of workers and protectors of families. One of the sweetest traditions of this day is enjoying zeppole—a crispy, golden pastry filled with custard or ricotta, often topped with powdered sugar and a cherry. In a recent decision, a panel of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a stay pending appeal in a legal challenge to a pair of President Trump’s executive orders which promulgated new policy directives regarding DEI programs. Going forward, the Fourth Circuit will now proceed to a full (albeit expedited) appellate review of the lower court’s preliminary injunction. On February 21, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland issued a nationwide preliminary injunction, temporarily halting the enforcement of three provisions of President Trump’s executive orders targeting #DEI programs. The court found that these provisions likely violate the First and Fifth Amendments. The ruling prevents federal agencies from terminating contracts, lifting compliance certification requirements, and barring civil investigations into private DEI programs. The Trump administration appealed the decision, but on March 3, the Fourth Circuit denied a stay of the injunction.
