Collaboration is key to expanding and sustaining high-impact tutoring. At the Deans for Impact (DFI) Aspiring Teachers as Tutors Network Convening last week, Mariko Yoshisato Cavey, Director of Higher Education Partnerships at the Partnership for Student Success, joined Liz Cohen from FutureEd to discuss strategies for mobilizing aspiring teachers as tutors. The conversation highlighted how Federal Work-Study funding and college-district partnerships can strengthen tutoring initiatives, while also addressing the role of schools of education in sustaining tutoring. As the tutoring landscape evolves, partnerships like these are critical in ensuring students receive the support they need. Thank you to Deans for Impact for convening such an important discussion and to all who are working to scale high-impact tutoring for student success. #Tutoring #HigherEd #K12 #StudentSuccess

?? How do #collegesanduniversities prepare future teachers and fuel #K12 academic success at the same time? By connecting preservice teachers with local K-5 students via high-impact tutoring! This hands-on approach accelerates student learning in reading and math while building future educators' skills: One preservice teacher from Wittenberg University named Jackie tutored a 4th grade girl Ana at Lagonda Elementary School. “It helps her and it helps me, because I’m planning on being a teacher,” says Jackie about the program and her experience. “Tutoring helps because sometimes [students] may be discouraged just because they don’t understand or can’t get someone to answer their questions. ???????? ???????? ???????????????? ???????? ?????????????? ???????? ???? ????????.” When the semester closed, Ana’s teacher told Jackie that Ana took a benchmark test, and though Jackie hadn’t known it, ??????'?? ?????????????? ?????????????????????????? ?????????? ?????? ???????????? ?? ???????? ????????. ?? Thank you to Mariko Yoshisato Cavey from the Partnership for Student Success and Liz Cohen from FutureEd at Georgetown for speaking to our #AspiringTeachersAsTutors Network last week! Mariko kicked off our discussion by sharing insights and resources for how Federal Work Study funding can be used to bolster efforts to mobilize aspiring teachers as tutors, leveraging her insights gained from supporting programs across the nation tap into and strategically leverage this funding. If you want to learn more, check out the Partnership for Student Success’ website: https://lnkd.in/gWj7AJEW Liz then shared about emerging evidence demonstrating that high-impact tutoring has on student attendance. Pointing to the hypothesis that a meaningful relationship with an adult can be an important factor in a student’s decision to come to school, she highlighted how recent research finds that students were more likely to attend school on days that they had a tutoring session, especially those with a history of chronic absence. Our network of leaders are continuing to invest in the win-win opportunity for teacher preparation and schools to mobilize aspiring teachers to serve as tutors. There's nothing better than seeing first-hand the incredible work happening on the ground in our #schools. We hope the pictures and success story from Harrison School District 2 warm your hearts as much as they did for us! The High-Impact Tutoring program manager for this district in Colorado is on our Educator Advisory Group, and she invited us to a site visit to see #highimpacttutoring in action! Here are our takeaways: ?? ???????????????? ???????????????? ???????? ??????????: This district is in their second year of literacy tutoring for K-3 students. Working in six schools, the?tutors are #paraeducators?who follow the research-based ECRI (enhanced core reading instruction) program developed at Boston University. Students receive tutoring either... ?? 5x/week, 30 minutes a day OR ?? 4x/week, 40 minutes a day ... in groups of 4 students or less for 10-12 week cycles. ?? ????????????????????: Tutoring takes place during a set intervention block. All students have core reading instruction and then either go to ECRI high-impact tutoring, or they do a WIN intervention block. (A spillover effect?we heard is that, with some students now in High-Impact Tutoring, the WIN intervention blocks became smaller, making those more effective — essentially raising all boats). ?? ?? ???????????????? ?????? ?????????????? ??????????????: The tutors receive lots of training and support from the High-Impact Tutoring program manager, underscoring the?importance of a central program manager?as well as?the district’s strong commitment to professional development. ?? ?? ?????? ?????????? ???? ??????????????????????????: It was very?evident how much the paras were valued as team members. They are hired for tutoring and we did not observe them being pulled in other directions. One tutor recently became a teacher! ?? ?? ????????, ????????, ????????: Data usage, dosage and ratio are on point!?The students are selected into tutoring based on DIBELS data and data is monitored throughout tutoring cycles. ?? ?? ???????????????????????? ?????? ??????: The program is funded by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) which in turn gets funding from Accelerate’s States Leading Recovery grant. Researchers from Boston University provide ongoing professional development around ECRI. But the district?faces funding challenges?due to the timing of the CDE grant cycle. ?? ?? ??????????????!?In 10-12 weeks, all 6 schools saw progress. One school saw 62% of tutored students move to benchmark or above benchmark and graduate out of High-Impact Tutoring! The other 5 schools had large percentages of students making above average or well above average?growth?(meaning students are getting closer to benchmark). ?? Feeling inspired?
