It's Holiday Trees time! Proud to help support this long-beloved community tradition, started by Long Beach resident and restaurateur, Don May, back in 1949. Don floated a real Christmas Tree in the water, which continued until about 1953, when it was replaced with a 16-foot pyramid-shaped tree we see today constructed from lumber, multi-colored holiday lights and white paint. The City of Long Beach provided all program costs until the early 1970s when the energy crisis threatened to kill the program. Neighborhood residents gathered together as "Trees in the Bay" and began fundraising to help cover the costs of Trees in the upper Alamitos Bay area. Later, other homeowners groups like Peninsula Beach Preservation Group and the Alamitos Heights Improvement Association began fundraising to have the City provide additional Trees in other sections of Alamitos Bay. Partners of Parks stepped in to provide nonprofit services to coordinate the program. As the popularity of the Trees grew, other groups got involved to help add more trees. There are currently 73 Trees in City waterways and on 2nd Street Median. Keep the tradition alive by donating today: https://lnkd.in/g5tZFyh
