  • What should you consider when building an effective job description? 1. When listing the essential functions or duties of the position, don't go into detail at the task level. 2. We've probably all learned to start each essential function with an active verb. 3. Use active, business language and avoid prepositional phrases. Keep it clear and concise. 4. It is important to include regular and predictable attendance as an essential function, which will protect you when it comes to considering ADA accommodations. 5. List the essential functions in order of importance and level of responsibilities. End with attendance and other duties as assigned. *** One of my favorites, "Maintain regular and predictable attendance during business hours to perform the duties of the position, including other duties as assigned." 6. Avoid phrases like, "under the discretion of (title)..." That is all implied because you have listed to whom the position reports. 7. I prefer bullets over numbers. I think numbers add meaning that isn't really there. 8. Keep your minimum experience & qualifications as exactly that. Don't box yourself in. Use your preferred section as a wish list, or for things you can train a new employee to do, rather than as required. 9. No need to list, "minimum of 4 years..." when it is under the minimum experience and qualifications section. Just list 4 years. 10. Avoid listing years of experience as a "5 to 7 years". If the minimum is 5, list 5. It makes it look like you only want people in that timeframe. 11. Keep your position summary as a summary and don't list things that will be repeated in the essential functions. Write a short and concise summary of the position, providing an quick, broad understanding of the position. Need help with a job description project? Let me know. #jobdescription #positionreview #jobposting

I think learning other languages really helped me to better understand English.

When did high schools and colleges, for that matter, start churning out graduates who do not speak English correctly? The three most commonly misused words I have observed are, the contraction of "is" (there's), "myself" and "yourself". * It has become easier to use "there's" all of the time, instead of "there are" as necessary. "There's five balls" - when not contracted becomes, "There is five balls", and we all know it should be, "There are five balls". We learned this in elementary school. * Somewhere along the line, someone decided that using the word, "myself", made them sound more intelligent. However, you do not use the word, "myself", unless you first use the word, "I", because you are referring back to yourself. "It was Jane and myself at the party." It was actually Jane and me at the party. You would not say, "It was myself at the party." You would say, "It was me at the party." Just take the other individual out of the sentence and see how it sounds without them. The correct use would be, "I, myself, went to the party alone." "Myself" refers back to "I". * In the sentence, above, you see that I used "yourself" and it was prefaced with "you", as the original pronoun to which I referred back. ".....because YOU are referring back to yourself." Have a little fun and start listening to the people around you. Focus on the media and you will be surprised what you hear. Then challenge yourself (you is implied as you are already the subject of the message) to evaluate your own speech." And have a wonderful day! PS - to all of the English professors out there, please correct any mistakes I may have made, so I can learn as well. https://lnkd.in/gEPebJcu https://lnkd.in/gN-G9Cur

It surprises me how often I come across a job announcement from a large corporation, that has spelling or grammatical errors in the content. It is easy to make small errors, and I do it myself as well. You work diligently to create a document, review and edit, and then change a few words, or use a different verb strategy. The next thing you know, you have missed the word "for", which should have been changed to use "to". The announcement gets posted, and detail-oriented readers will catch the mistake immediately. What perception does this create? I'll be honest. It makes me think the posting department lacks a certain level of professionalism. How do you avoid this? Some tips and tricks I use are to firstly, walk away and then read it again later, with fresh eyes. Secondly, have a peer read the document. Select someone who will actually take the time to proof read for you. Reading the document out loud is helpful. Lastly, past the document into Word and run the spell and grammar checks. A small word of advice, the grammar check function is not always 100% accurate. Perhaps this is where #AI will come in handy.
