News deserts are a real thing, and this blog post from tech company NewsBreak lays out the challenging state of local news access: "The erosion of local news is forcing more of us to look beyond traditional news outlets to social media or national news apps without hyper-local focus. A recent Pew Research survey found that 86% of U.S. adults access news via digital devices at least sometimes, with 57% doing so often. At the same time, it remains incredibly frustrating to try to find what matters to us when news is coming from all angles, and when we have to sort fact from fiction along the way." Every time I turn around in my new(ish) role with States Newsroom I discover just how far-reaching our work is. Having our journalism distributed daily through NewsBreak is huge. It was a pleasure talking with them for this blog post.

NewsBreak helps get States Newsroom's work to hundreds of thousands of readers each week. This blog post quotes my colleague, Lara Weber, on how we're helping to fill the gap left by local news outlets shutting down. “NewsBreak plays an important role in getting our stories out by making them available to readers for free, localized for wherever they are," Weber said.

People want and need local news: to stay informed, to get involved, to support local businesses, and to celebrate the achievements of family, friends, and neighbors, young and old.
