We were excited to be with our partners in Decatur last week as we closed out Year 3 of work with the REACH (Resilience Education to Advance Community Healing) initiative. Thank you to our partners at the Center for Childhood Resilience, Illinois State Board of Education, Statewide SEL Hubs, JT Comms, Partnership for Resilience, Parliament: Collective Intelligence, and the Stress & Trauma Treatment Center, Inc., who have all worked tirelessly on this effort! This vital program provides schools with the tools needed to support the social and emotional well-being of students and staff across Illinois. We look forward to continuing in Year 4 and seeing the work grow!

Our VP of Data & Insights Steven Shewfelt recently attended Good Tech Fest, an invitation-only retreat for social sector leaders. As Steve reports: "Good Tech Fest was an amazing opportunity to be in the room with a brilliant collection of data and technology-focused change-makers from around the world. Philanthropic and non-profit leaders and doers convened in Sundance, UT to share lessons learned and best practices in bringing data and technology to bear on addressing some of the social sector's most complicated problems. I was honored to be part of the conversation and truly enjoyed the camaraderie and conversations. (Plus, no small thing, it was so great to be able to spend time with our old colleague Paul Sznewajs again!)." https://lnkd.in/eBAtzx8 https://lnkd.in/g4FweU-Z

We're so grateful to be working with such committed and strategic partners like Jack McBride and the entire Arts Connect Houston team to bring artlook data on arts education access and equity into the conversation in Houston. Check out their inaugural State of the Arts in HISD report: https://lnkd.in/gBC7vpQa
The State of the Arts in Education Symposium is an annual event hosted by Arts Connect Houston intended to update our community on the latest developments in arts education in Houston, offer reflections on the last year, and brainstorm what the future can and should look like. This year, the cornerstone of the State of the Arts was the 2022-2023 State of the Arts in Houston Independent School District Baseline Report. The report outlines key access, quality, and partnership benchmarks and discusses goals and next for building on and improving those areas. There a few key takeaways from the report that exemplify Houston ISD's arts education landscape for the 22-23 school year. Access - Despite progress, 4% of elementary schools and 7.7% of secondary and alternative campuses (a total of 15 campuses) remain arts deserts, lacking any fine arts instructors, impacting thousands of students. - Nearly half of HISD high schools and 35% of HISD’s elementary campuses did not meet Proficient student-fine arts teacher ratio benchmarks as defined by the Texas Cultural Trust Pilot Arts Education Access Benchmarks. Quality - Most elementary and secondary campuses that completed the survey reported that they follow state arts learning standards. - Secondary campuses demonstrate a higher proportion of family and community engagement activities, as well as arts-specific professional development opportunities for their instructors, compared to elementary campuses. Partnerships - 27% of HISD campuses report having no partnerships with arts organizations. - Given the breadth of fine arts disciplines represented by Houston’s arts organizations, students have the opportunity to experience programs in disciplines beyond the four Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) fine arts areas, like literary or media arts. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gBC7vpQa Watch a recording of the presentation here: https://lnkd.in/gcRHcJbP Join us in this effort. To learn how we can all work together with Houston ISD to ensure all students have access to a fine arts education, connect with us here, on our Instagram at @artsconnecthouston, and Twitter at @artsconnecthtx. Special thanks to our hosts at Asia Society Texas Center and to our sponsors Anonymous and Sterling for their support for this event.
