Parker Dewey is a platform that facilitates Micro-Internships, helping companies recruit college students and recent grads, while also providing on-demand support for busy professionals. By offering opportunities for Career Launchers to execute short-term, professional projects, companies can engage, assess, and recruit prospective candidates for full-time roles or summer internships, including those students who might not otherwise apply or get filtered out by traditional processes. As a result companies, improve hiring, diversity, and retention outcomes. This approach works because busy professionals appreciate the immediate support from highly motivated college students on projects that would otherwise take them 5-40 hours to complete, and don’t require deep expertise in the space or access to sensitive information (eg content creation, lead generation, research, data cleansing, etc.). While not the best use of time for an experienced professional, college students and recent grads are excited complete these projects as a ways to demonstrate their skills, build relationships, and explore career paths. And given the structure of Micro-Internships, they are easy to use, there are no administrative or HR burdens, and there are no costs should a Micro-Intern get hired for an ongoing role. If you're not familiar, Parker Dewey Micro-Internships are short-term, paid, professional projects that allow college students or recent graduates to explore companies and careers while building experience. In March of 2023, I did a Micro-Internship with the non-profit organization Always Mercy. My Micro-Internship experience allowed me to gain paid, professional experience, develop my skills, build professional connections, and enhance my resume. The experience was very straight forward, and in just a few weeks I finished the project and enjoyed everything I acquired from the experience. My work with Always Mercy involved putting my writing and researching skills into practice by writing three well-researched articles for their organization. The project was very flexible as I could write the articles by my own schedule, so I was able to easily complete the task in spite of being a full-time college student. I obtained first-hand experience on what it's like to write articles that represent a given organization's voice and target the desired audience as this was one of the first times I wrote for an organization/company rather than for myself, and I was able to communicate and build a relationship with the organization's leaders as we brainstormed for the article while I carefully considered their vision. I can continue applying these skills as I search for other opportunities to research for other companies or create blog posts and articles. While I never imagined a career or side-hustle in writing for myself, this Micro-Internship experience expanded my possibilities and opened my mind to the options. I realized that I enjoy writing articles and that this is a viable path for me to take in addition to my other professional plans. It is easier to try new things when the commitment is short so that you don't have to dive in head first into an entirely new experience for a full-time position, so I believe that the project-based aspect of Micro-Internships offers the means to dabble into different fields and jobs so that you can discover what truly appeals to you and what you're good at.
