PARE Prevalence of Antibiotic Resistance in the Environment Project

?? The United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (#AMR) has concluded, and the declaration has been committed. Now, it's time to move beyond UNGA and focus on implementing actionable solutions to address the significant burden of AMR. At ICARS, we envision a world where drug-resistant infections no longer threaten human and animal health, our environment, global food security, or economic prosperity. We are committed to partnering with ministries and research institutions in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (#LMICs) to co-develop and test cost-effective, context-specific AMR solutions. These initiatives are designed for scale-up across the #OneHealth spectrum, building on National Action Plans and guided by intervention and implementation research. Currently, we have over 40 projects in more than 20 countries, collaborating with over 70 research institutions and ministries across all areas of One Health. Tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) requires international collaboration to preserve the effectiveness of existing treatments and develop new, affordable, and accessible solutions. Last night in New York, the Novo Nordisk Foundation and Healthcare Denmark hosted a High-Level Reception with Denmark In New York, bringing together key global stakeholders. The event allowed experts to share insights on the impact of #AMR and strategies to combat it, ahead of today's United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance.

Antimicrobial resistance disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries. Data is needed to track and tackle this threat. But collecting data in these countries can be challenging. Dr Andrew Kambugu, medical doctor and Sande McKinnell Executive Director at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University, sets out some of the challenges in our latest ‘Behind the Research’ newsletter - and how CAMO-Net is working to tackle them. “The picture of antimicrobial resistance is evolving - it’s like a moving target. Impressive work by Bala Selvakumar and his team of high school students at Polytechnic School. It's great to see great young minds tacking the problem of antibiotic resistance.

Drug-resistant infections are a global problem. They’re a threat to our health, livelihoods, healthcare systems and national economies. However, the weight of this burden is not felt equally. Not even close. In 2019, nearly 90% of all deaths caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria were in low- and middle-income countries. The highest death rates were in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. To make matters worse – many more people could be affected than we realise. Due to insufficient data and standardised surveillance, it’s very difficult to understand the true burden of drug-resistant infections. Very big shout out to Emma Krzyzanowski of Hampton Roads Academy and her instructor Maribel Gendreau. Emma presented her research "PARE: Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria in Your Backyard"?at the Virginia Junior Academy of Sciences in front of a panel of judges. Emma was awarded second place in the "Microbiology and Cell Biology" category.?Emma studied soil bacteria and its resistance to various antibiotics as part of the PARE Prevalence of Antibiotic Resistance in the Environment Project through Tufts University School of Medicine and Tufts Center for Integrated Management of Antimicrobial Resistance (CIMAR). Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of our greatest threats to human health. It kills around 1.27 million people every year, and this figure is expected to increase substantially over the next two decades. Despite this, global action has remained weak and fragmented. However, we have a unique opportunity to change that. This year, a number of important political events are planned. They give global leaders the chance to come together and agree on how to deliver much-needed action on AMR. We cannot miss this opportunity – the stakes are too high.
