This acknowledgment from Vivek Murthy, the US Surgeon General, is a huge step forward in acknowledging that our culture is not set up to support working parents and caregivers or parents returning to paid work after a career pause. I see this lived reality in my coaching clients all the time. They are parents navigating career transitions, leading at work while leading at home, or returning to paid work after a career pause. ?? Returners often left paid work because their workplaces weren't flexible. When they look to get back to paid work many companies overlook and undervalue the skills they developed in their unpaid caregiving work. ?? Mr. Murthy calls on companies to change this practice: “It's time to value and respect time spent parenting on par with time spent working at a paying job, recognizing the critical importance to society of raising children.” ?? More companies need to look at their hiring practices, acknowledge the skills returners develop in unpaid work, and hire them back into paid work. Reach out if you are looking to train your hiring managers on the value that returners bring to paid work. ?? Parents are expected to work like they don’t have caregiving responsibilities, keep going, and push through. This practice is burning people out. ?? The advisory suggests implementing training for managers on stress management and work-life harmony. ?? Companies need to train their managers to better support parents and caregivers. Congratulations to Melissa who has returned to paid work as a front desk receptionist and dental assistant! Melissa shared “In my unpaid work as a stay at home mom managing my 2 kids, 2 pets, and our household, I had to keep everything clean and in order and flowing as well as possible at all times like a well-oiled machine. It is the same at my new office. I have to keep all of the office supplies and treatment rooms very clean and in order. I have to schedule patient's appointments and send out reminders to make sure we have a good flow of business.” Both roles required a high degree of organization and attention to detail which Melissa excels at! We are so excited to watch her THRIVE in this new role! Research conducted by Gail Matthews, a professor of psychology at Dominican University in California, shows that writing down your goals can make it 40% more likely that you will achieve them. She also found that you can increase your chances to 76% when you have a weekly accountability partner. That is part of the magic of participating in Parents Pivot's THRIVE group coaching program for returning to paid work! The summer cohort will meet for 9 weeks beginning June 4th. You will get accountability from Holly, Parents Pivot's THRIVE coach, who has led multiple THRIVE cohorts to success through expert guidance and thought provoking coaching. You will also have the accountability of your supportive cohort of other returners also looking to get back to paid work. A returner who recently joined the summer cohort of THRIVE had this to say "I just signed up for THRIVE and am feeling such a sense of relief and excitement!"
