It is well established that parents shape the career aspirations and job readiness of their kids. This study by Georgetown's Rebecca Ryan, University of Chicago's Ariel Kalil and their colleagues seems to be the first to show "the causal impact of parents' beliefs about future economic mobility prospects (awaiting their children) affect parents' beliefs about the return on their investments as well as their choices in how to invest their time and money." They also show parents' belief is in decline, which "could jeopardize children's educational futures."
