Nurturing Freedom in Our Homes

关于我们

Parenting for Liberation believes in the power of parents to conceive, birth, and nurture liberation for the future. Launched in 2016 by Trina Greene Brown as a virtual platform featuring blogs and podcasts to connect, inspire, and uplift Black parents as they navigate and negotiate raising Black children within the social and political context of the U.S., Parenting for Liberation is rooted in an Afro-futuristic vision of a world where Black parents are in community with each other to raise Black children without fear and instead parent for liberation. Our mission is to cultivate resilient and joyful Black families that are doing the healing work to interrupt historical traumas, dismantle harmful narratives about the Black family, and create community that amplifies Black girl magic and Black boy joy. To date, Parenting for Liberation has produced more than a dozen audio podcasts with nearly 4,000 plays via SoundCloud and iTunes, self-published a StoryBook Workbook distributing nearly 100 copies, and curated hundreds of blog posts. Extending beyond virtual connections, Parenting for Liberation has convened over 100 parents in Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Idaho, and San Diego, and virtually via Mama’s University. These convenings hold space for Black parents who are freedom fighting for our collective liberation to engage with one another and share how they operationalize liberation in their homes.

I recently had the opportunity to attend a parent-focused session hosted by the Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement?at the TDSB. The session featured Trina Greene, author of?the book Parenting For Liberation and Founder & Executive Director Parenting for Liberation, and it was exactly what I needed—a space to connect, reflect, and learn alongside other Black parents committed to creating equitable spaces for all children. As some of you know, I’m an active parent in my child’s school and serve as one of the school council chairs. This role has come with its share of unexpected challenges, but sessions like this remind me of the power of community, collective wisdom, and the importance of staying grounded in the work. Ms. Greene opened with a quote from Audre Lorde that shook me to my core and then shared the pillars of?Parenting for Black Liberation:?Love, Healing, and Community. The line that has stayed with me for days now is: "To love (yourself, your child, your culture, your Blackness) and to resist (doubt, oppressive systems, division)." I left the session feeling re-energized and grateful for these conversations. I also picked up a copy of?Parenting for Liberation, which was referenced throughout—if it’s anything like the presentation, I can’t wait to dive in. I’ve included a few pictures from the session—if you’ve read the book or attended a similar discussion, I’d love to hear your thoughts! #ParentingForLiberation #BlackJoy #Community #EquityInEducation #ParentLeadership #BlackHistoryMonth
