I recently had the opportunity to attend a parent-focused session hosted by the Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement?at the TDSB. The session featured Trina Greene, author of?the book Parenting For Liberation and Founder & Executive Director Parenting for Liberation, and it was exactly what I needed—a space to connect, reflect, and learn alongside other Black parents committed to creating equitable spaces for all children. As some of you know, I’m an active parent in my child’s school and serve as one of the school council chairs. This role has come with its share of unexpected challenges, but sessions like this remind me of the power of community, collective wisdom, and the importance of staying grounded in the work. Ms. Greene opened with a quote from Audre Lorde that shook me to my core and then shared the pillars of?Parenting for Black Liberation:?Love, Healing, and Community. The line that has stayed with me for days now is: "To love (yourself, your child, your culture, your Blackness) and to resist (doubt, oppressive systems, division)." I left the session feeling re-energized and grateful for these conversations. I also picked up a copy of?Parenting for Liberation, which was referenced throughout—if it’s anything like the presentation, I can’t wait to dive in. I’ve included a few pictures from the session—if you’ve read the book or attended a similar discussion, I’d love to hear your thoughts! #ParentingForLiberation #BlackJoy #Community #EquityInEducation #ParentLeadership #BlackHistoryMonth
