Two researchers studied the best way to cancel the motherhood penalty and develop leaders, and you know what they found? Career coaching through parental leave can powerfully influence new mothers' trajectory in the workforce. We interviewed Angela Passarelli, Ph.D. and Spela Trefalt, the authors of this study, to dig into their findings. Here are Allison Whalen's top 4 takeaways from their conversation: 1?? New parents want to find meaning and feel valued at work: Career coaching sessions are often focused on the idea of meaningful work and envisioning life post-leave—something we also find in our coaching programs. 2?? People returning from leave aren’t necessarily quitting their jobs to leave the workforce; they’re moving on to go somewhere that’s more supporting of working parents or culture better aligns to their values. 3?? For maximum impact on retention for parental leave, career coaching should start before an employee goes on leave. If you only provide coaching when an employee returns to work, it’s less likely to support long-term career vision and doesn’t address the business needs pre-leave. 4?? Educating managers on benevolent sexism is critical to ensure they support their direct reports without inadvertently discriminating against them. Because despite good intentions, managers often treat pregnant women with excessive caution, which can harm their careers. Read more about their research via Fast Company and listen to our interview with Angie and Spela to hear what they'll study next. ?? #parentalleave #careercoaching #career #research

Representation matters! At 81 Collection’s Annual Meeting last week, four founders were interviewed by four successful entrepreneurs during a “spotlight series.” This was a rare opportunity to have just a few select founders present their business to hundreds of investors, businesspeople and influential folks. Here’s the amazing part: 50% of the people on stage were mothers. Two of the four featured founders were mothers with three children. Two of the four interviewers were mothers of very young children. Today, < 3% of VC funding goes to women, and only a subset of that goes to mothers. Yet there we were, seeing mothers on stage, talking about their startups. And there were also mothers on stage who had experienced significant, life-changing success - interviewing founders coming up behind them. I was honored to be one of those entrepreneurs, interviewed by the incredible Shivani Jain Dalmia, co-founder of Cubii. Thank you to The 81 Collection for bringing together so many inspirational entrepreneurs … including the entrepreneurs who just so happen to be mothers!

Why aren’t managers better equipped to support the parental leave experience? “There isn’t enough talk about this challenge. So if we’re not talking about how difficult parental leave/return to work can be, then we’re not training our managers.” - Allison Whalen #parentalleave #peoplemanagement #employeeexperience

This is just one of the eye-opening findings from our research study of nearly 3,000 employees who took parental leave within the last 3 years. And tomorrow, Allison Whalen will dig into how parental leave impacts an entire organization - and four other key findings - in a free session with SHRM.
