During Hurricanes #Helene and #Milton, we saw HCA Healthcare colleagues embody the true spirit of dedication and resilience. Today, we’re honored to shine a light on Victoria Drury, a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in HCA Healthcare’s Memorial Satilla Health emergency department. Never once calling in during her nine years at the Waycross, Georgia hospital, Victoria maintains a perfect attendance record that is both inspiring and a testament to her character. Despite the severe storm damage in her community following Hurricane Helene, Victoria was determined to make it to Memorial Satilla Health to care for patients and support her team. Unfortunately, both exits from her neighborhood were blocked by debris, so Victoria called the hospital and was told Emergency Department Director Ashton Poole would come pick her up at first light if she could make it out to the main road. For Victoria, dependability is more than a personal value – it’s a legacy she aims to impart to others. “I always try to teach my children to be somebody to rely on,” Victoria shared. “Your character is your word, and I try to be that example.” When Victoria arrived at the hospital, she diligently worked alongside her fellow ER colleagues to ensure anyone who needed care could receive it. “What stood out was all the admin and staff just coming together to work,” Victoria said. The HCA Healthcare Hope Fund, a 501(c)(3) charity that helps HCA Healthcare employees and their immediate families who are affected by financial hardship, today announced that The Frist Foundation has donated $1 million to support HCA Healthcare colleagues impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Hurricane Helene made landfall as a powerful category 4 hurricane on Thursday, September 26, leaving more than four million people without power and causing major damage as it traveled throughout the Southeast. Less than two weeks later, Hurricane Milton hit the west coast of Florida as a category 3 hurricane bringing powerful wind, rain and flooding throughout the state. In the wake of Hurricanes #Helene and #Milton, HCA Florida Healthcare announced today a contribution of $750,000 to community organizations dedicated to meeting the needs of those impacted throughout Florida. This gift provides $250,000 to United Way of Florida, $250,000 to Volunteer Florida Disaster Fund, and a $250,000 special match for gifts made by HCA Healthcare colleagues to United Way of Florida, the American Red Cross and the HCA Healthcare Hope Fund—the company’s colleague-run, colleague-supported 501(c)3 charity benefiting its colleagues and their immediate families affected by financial hardship. “The impact of these disasters has been overwhelming for our colleagues and communities in Florida,” said Joanne Pulles, vice president of community engagement at HCA Healthcare. “Yet, our teams have responded with incredible diligence, sacrifice and care to contribute to the health and safety of our communities. HCA Healthcare established the HCA Healthcare Hope Fund to support colleagues in disasters such as this. The Hope Fund is a colleague-run, colleague-supported 501(c)(3) charity that provides financial aid to employees after an extended illness, injury, disaster or other special situation. To date, the Hope Fund has given more than $834,000 in grants to help over 1,000 HCA Healthcare colleagues in Florida impacted by the recent storms. In the aftermath of the recent hurricanes, we continue to see the best of humanity shine through. Taylor McCaulley, a nurse manager at Mission Hospital, was one of hundreds of dedicated colleagues that served our patients when Hurricane #Helene reached Western North Carolina. Throughout her 15-year nursing career, Taylor shared that she had never faced a moment like Hurricane Helene. She credits the extraordinary acts of service and teamwork displayed by her fellow Mission Health colleagues as essential to bringing patients and the community through the storm. “You never want to be in a situation where you're seeing all these people hurting physically and emotionally, but then on the other hand, you're seeing all of these staff members that are coming in just to truly save the day,” Taylor shares. “It’s mind-blowing how far HCA Healthcare’s reach is. Earlier this month, I was given an opportunity to visit Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia, GA to assist with Hurricane Helene PTAC recovery efforts. This small town suffered unfortunate devastations resulting in power outages in the entire town, no cell service, a boil advisory on their water supply, and limited gas for residents resulting in restricted travels. Experiences like this reinforces the “why” behind my motivation to be a future leader. Showing up during devastations, providing support, and being the beacon of light to help make someone else’s circumstance better is the goal for me. We also met Ms. Ann, an EVS worker who lost nearly everything in the hurricane. Her ability to show up to work, in the best spirits despite losing everything was truly inspiring. Our hurricane team rallied together, personally purchased food items for Ms. Ann, and we also introduced her to the Mini Mart where she was able to shop for additional items. I can’t even begin to describe in full context how much this experience meant to me. Thank you to the best hurricane team! During Hurricane #Milton, our HCA Florida Healthcare colleagues demonstrated incredible resilience and dedication as they provided uninterrupted care to our patients — including new moms that were welcoming babies into the world during the storm. At HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital, one of our tiny patients was given a special name upon making his grand debut during this unforgettable moment — Liam Milton. Proud parents Luisa and Christiano welcomed their new baby boy at the Port St. Lucie hospital on October 9, during Hurricane Milton. “I had already chosen Liam for his name and my husband was going to choose his middle name,” Luisa shared. “Because of the hurricane, he chose Milton.” Across HCA Healthcare, we proudly deliver over 218,000 babies annually.
