One of the most important metrics often overlooked when measuring organization productivity is People’s Experience. Our latest study highlights the Experience dimension of the Paradox Productivity Framework, showing how a positive experience both FOR your team and WITH your team leads to lasting success. Measuring experience is critical because it impacts FUTURE productivity. If you don’t pay attention to people’s experience, you may be negatively impacting your future productivity…and net productivity…due to short-term focus. Boosting experience metrics might mean taking some extra time with a customer, putting extra effort into building team or cross-department relationships, or getting to know your supplier’s business and interests. At times, these activities can seem at odds with productivity when we’re focused on checking the box and pushing towards milestones. But, in reality, the extra time and effort spent today will make work easier and more efficient down the road. A great team and career experience leads to easier recruiting, employee retention, and innovation. A supplier who loves working with your team might go that extra mile to get you the material or information you need. A happy customer will make that next sale or referral that much easier. Most organizations are measuring experience metrics, but they can be siloed within functions. Adding them into the way you measure and report productivity gives leaders a more complete picture of the team’s activity and potential both in the short-term and the long-term. By prioritizing experience, you’re not just improving productivity, you’re investing in the future of your organization. Have you ever put effort into developing something—a new system, process, or tool, only to see it go unused??? Our latest research study reveals a critical insight. ?? Productivity isn’t only about completing tasks; what truly matters is how that creation, product, or service is adopted, applied, and utilized. The second dimension of our Paradox Productivity Framework, Usage, shines a light on the often-overlooked aspect of productivity: adoption and impact. It’s not enough to simply create something, the value lies in how it’s received, adopted, and utilized by others. In our quest to accomplish tasks, check off the to-do list, and feel productive, we often don’t take the time to make sure we are setting our creation, product, or service up for maximum use or adoption. By adding usage metrics to the way we measure team productivity, it can build awareness and visibility about the factors that increase the productivity of our work – including factors that may be outside the responsibility of our team or department – thereby increasing communication and raising overall organization productivity. Ready to rethink how you measure team productivity? Discover how the Usage dimension can expand your approach. In our fast-paced work environments, simply ‘staying busy’ isn’t enough - it’s also not a true indicator of real productivity. In fact, it’s a good way to burn out without much to show for it. Our recent study outlines the three dimensions of The Paradox Productivity Framework. The first dimension, Movement, emphasizes progress. So what does that even mean? True productivity is about making meaningful progress towards your goals. It’s more than just checking off items from your to-do list. It’s ensuring that every effort moves you closer to achieving significant milestones and objectives. Instead of measuring productivity by the number of tasks completed, Movement focuses on the impact of each task on meaningful progress in the right direction. Leaders consistently emphasized that true productivity involves directing work and resources towards goals and objectives that matter. Curious about how the Movement dimension can transform your productivity strategy? Dive deeper into our findings and learn how to apply this dimension to your organization. Traditional productivity measures are failing to capture the true essence of modern work. ?? It’s time for a more effective approach that addresses the complexities of work activities that contribute to productive outcomes. In our latest study, we introduce The Paradox Productivity Framework. Developed from insights gathered through interviews with industry leaders, this framework reveals what truly makes a team or individual productive—not just busy. The framework redefines productivity across three essential dimensions: ?? Movement - Productivity is about making meaningful progress toward your goals. Movement captures this forward momentum, ensuring that every effort contributes to achieving important milestones and objectives. ?? Usage - The true value of work lies in its adoption and impact. Usage measures how well your creations, products, or services are utilized and engaged with, emphasizing quality over mere task completion. ?? Experience - Long-term productivity hinges on the experiences of everyone involved. By focusing on the experiences of employees, customers, and stakeholders, we can foster environments that drive sustained productivity and engagement. Our comprehensive study shows that integrating these three dimensions provides a holistic view of productivity, enabling leaders and teams to focus on what truly drives success. ?? After interviewing 30 leaders from startups to Fortune 500 about their perspectives on productivity and months analyzing their responses, the results of our study on redefining productivity for our workplaces today are here! So much about work has changed in recent years: how we work, where we work, when we work, the work itself. Some months ago, we asked a senior HR executive at a Fortune 500 company whether she’d seen any changes in how her company was defining, describing, or measuring productivity based on the challenges we were seeing at our clients and in the market. She responded, “To be candid, that is the core of what organizations are struggling with…I don’t have an answer yet.” Her response prompted me to embark on a study to find an answer to that question: How DO we define, describe, and measure productivity in our workplaces today? Today, I share the answer. The purpose of the new definition is to give leaders, managers, and team members the language and framework to be able to analyze, discuss, measure, and increase productivity for their team in a way that is both good for business and good for people. So, please read the paper, share, and comment below. What resonates? What doesn't? Let’s get a new conversation going about productivity in our workplaces today. ?? Is your organization measuring productivity the right way? We know people have different strengths and work styles. We know that many of us are working towards outcomes that will take years to realize. We also know that resources – time, energy, money – are not infinite, and the way we invest these resources has real implications on our ability to achieve our objectives. Productivity matters. And, yet, it can be incredibly difficult to manage productivity in a way that considers different peoples’ capacities, recovery requirements, work styles, strengths, motivations, and long-term impact. Productivity is often not easily observed or measured. How do you know you are challenging team members without going too far? How do you know when you should have higher expectations? How do you know if you are enabling or preventing your team’s productivity? How do you know which individuals or teams are truly your most productive? In our latest research study, which we’ll be sharing this summer, we dove deep into answering these questions. A few of the topics our study covers include: ?? How to communicate and assess productivity expectations while also recognizing and caring for employee well-being ?? How to support activities that truly are productive – including some that may not be obvious ?? How to create a workplace that optimizes productivity while also being a place people want to work Imagine a workplace where teams have a shared understanding and language for productivity and engage in intentional decision-making about how they spend resources, including their own time and energy. ??
