Well done Jenny Lee-Cota. Your years of pro bono advocacy paid off in the most meaningful way for our client. And thanks to the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project for the opportunity and all the wisdom and support as co-counsel.
Congratulations to our client Santiago* for winning asylum! ?? He is featured above with his pro bono attorney, Jennifer Lee Cota of Papetti Samuels Weiss McKirgan LLP. Santiago faced political persecution in his home country of Peru, including arrests, torture, and a wrongful conviction. Despite this, he remained in Peru for years, committed to his family and continuing to advocate for what he thought was right in his community. But when the threat to his safety became too great, Santiago saw no choice but to flee to the U.S., in search of the freedom he deserved. However, upon his arrival, he was sent to immigration detention. Our Detention Action & Response Team first met him while he was detained and referred him to our Pro Bono Team. Our Pro Bono Team connected Santiago with an attorney who took his case with our mentorship. His asylum case was initially denied, but his legal team did not give up. They successfully appealed the decision—giving Santiago a second chance in court.? His pro bono attorney, Jennifer, Florence Project staff, and Santiago worked closely to prepare for his second appearance in court and secure this life-changing win. After a year and nine months, he was finally released and granted asylum. Santiago is thrilled to?be out of detention and beginning a new life in Arizona. Congratulations to our client! And thank you to Jennfier, Papetti Samuels Weiss McKirgan LLP, and everyone involved in this case. ?

We are excited to announce Larry Kasten has joined our firm. Larry is a superb lawyer, with decades of experience defending law firms, handling complex appeals, and addressing class actions. He's also our first attorney who clerked for the U.S. Supreme Court (Justices Brennan and Souter) after clerking for the Ninth Circuit (Judge Schroeder). A super fan of the Boss, he has seen lost track of how many times he has seen Bruce Springsteen perform. Welcome to the firm, Larry! https://lnkd.in/gzX4kg7X

We welcome to the firm attorney Ben Shattuck. Ben joined us after clerking for the Arizona Court of Appeals and the United States District Court for the District of Oregon. His experience clerking exposed him to the ins and outs of trial and appellate litigation. Between clerkships, Ben worked for a year at a regional firm in Portland, Oregon. There, Ben focused on business litigation, working on disputes involving antitrust, corporate governance, receiverships, and construction defects. Before law school, Ben received his BA from Gonzaga University, worked for an NGO in Guatemala for two years, and served as a history teacher at a Phoenix middle school. Ben graduated magna cum laude from Arizona State University, Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, where he also served as a Research Editor on the Arizona State Law Journal. He has already rolled up his sleeves and made important contributions to our clients' cases. Welcome, Ben.
