New AI meetup: Applying gen AI in the real world ?? Come and hear three people talk about their experiences helping organisations understand and apply gen AI: 1. Montgomery Anderson - Paperkite - How Life Education Trust is using the modular open-source AI framework Griptape to enhance the support they provide to teachers 2. Tom Hovey - Diagram - Lessons from gen AI training for RNZ, IoD, NZTA, NZ Rugby, NZDF, BERL, ENA and more. 3. Jason Schleifer - Griptape - Why we built Griptape, and how it's being used (Griptape was selected for AWS's global Generative AI Accelerator programme). If you're interested in gen AI, work with clients or technology, this is an amazing opportunity to get three perspectives on how gen AI is shaping how organisations think, and how customer engagement is changing. Plus - a free drink (thanks Paperkite!), nibbles and a chance to mingle with friendly, like-minded folks. At Paperkite at 5pm on Tuesday 10 December 2024. RSVP here: https://lnkd.in/gCyn5ivm

As we approach the end of Movember, we want to take this chance to talk about men’s mental health. As the Movember campaign states "It's time to speak up". The Sherwood Foundation aren't staying silent, they are a Wellington-based organisation on a mission to raise the standard of men’s mental health in Aotearoa, and help bring an end to male suicide. Currently, they’re crowdfunding through PledgeMe to gather the resources needed to deliver innovative mental health services. If this is a cause that resonates with you, you can learn more and contribute to their campaign here: https://lnkd.in/gDiX2BUD?

We recently had the pleasure of hosting Jack Callister at PaperKite for an engaging Friday session titled "Is HTMX the way to Go?". Jack shared his experience with Golang and HTMX when creating a super smooth user experience for Volley. With adept use of memes - a nod to the Go community's strong meme game - Jack's presentation was a great mix of technical depth and quality laughs. For those unfamiliar with Volley - they are revolutionising peer-to-peer payments by enabling users to send payment requests that can be fulfilled directly through banking apps, eliminating the bijillion steps needed when enchanging account details. Take a look. At PaperKite, we run regular Friday sessions with guest speakers who bring innovative insights, and healthy challenge and discussion. Thank you, Jack Callister, for sharing your journey and for casting a little thought provoking shade on those still stuck in JavaScript hell. Here's to more sessions that inspire and connect us ??. #TechTalks #Golang #HTMX #UserExperience #OpenBanking #Innovation

Last night, we had the privilege of hosting the Ruby Wellington meet-up again at PaperKite HQ, and what a great evening it was! A huge shoutout to the organisers, attendees, and especially the two incredible speakers who delivered insightful and genuinely thought-provoking talks. ?? Toh Jagraphob tackled the question “Can Ruby thrive in the booming age of data and AI?” With the data engineering ecosystem exploding, it was fascinating to hear his perspective on how Ruby developers can adapt and take advantage of this evolving landscape. ?? Jordan Crawford shared his journey (and frustrations!) with accessing personal financial data, offering insights into the current state of solutions and his DIY experiments. He left us with a sense of optimism for an open banking future … a topic close to many of our hearts. As always, it was an evening of connection, collaboration, and shared enthusiasm for Ruby. At PaperKite, we’re passionate about building community, sharing ideas, and exploring the future of tech. If your business or team is looking for expertise in mobile app development, AI solutions, or even just some good ideas over a coffee, let’s chat. We’d love to explore how we can work together. Here’s to more events like these and the incredible ideas they inspire. ?? #RubyWellington #TechCommunity #AI #OpenBanking #DataEngineering

Alright, I’ll be straight with you … this has been a tough year. But through every challenge, what keeps us going at PaperKite is knowing we’re building things that matter. We’ve been privileged to work with some of New Zealand’s biggest brands; household names in groceries, health, fast food, sport, weather, fuel, coffee, and more and together, we’ve created apps that genuinely connect with people. But here’s where we’re at: we’re ready for our next big project. We’ve got an incredible team, years of experience, and the drive to make things happen. Whether you’re a big name or an emerging startup, if you’re looking for a partner who’s all in, let’s talk. No fluff. Just results. #PaperKite #AppDevelopment #LetsBuildSomethingAmazing #Uplift #Empower

User research is one of the most powerful tools in product development — but it’s easy to make mistakes that can skew your insights and lead you in the wrong direction. In our latest post, we’re breaking down some of the most common mistakes people make during user research and how to avoid them. Here’s a sneak peek at what we cover: Asking leading questions like, “Do you like it?” ?? Relying on your friends and family for feedback (spoiler: they’re not going to tell you what they really think) ?? Talking to the wrong people ?? Whether you’re refining an MVP or launching a new feature, making sure you’re getting actionable, honest feedback from the right users is key to your product’s success. At PaperKite we take pride in the feedback we get from clients about the quality and value of our user research. But we also take pride in the fact that we try to upskill our clients with each engagement, so they are empowered to carry out robust user research themselves. After all, we want people to continue working with us because they want to, not because they have to. ?? Read the full blog: "Do they really like it? How to ask the right people the right questions." Projects and products that give people sustainable, long-term value are what we believe in. Southern Cross Healthcare came to us with a simple goal: to have technology help, not hinder, the vital work their nurses were already doing. Giving Southern Cross and their nurses long-term value, we: ? created a framework to help Southern Cross decide on technical investments in the future ? empowered Southern Cross staff to carry out research without our input to inform their future design and technical approaches ? made nurses’ working lives easier through recommendations for a sustainable, effective technical choice ? saved Southern Cross money by solving issues with simple technical solutions - which we did by getting to know nurses and their environments well. Want some help to make your team's working lives easier, save your business money, and realise your vision? Book a conversation with Rob Holmes, our Discovery Lead. We'll tell you if we can help and, if we can't, we'll help connect you to someone who can. ???? Link in the comments.

You have a killer idea for an app or website. You’re excited, naturally. You can’t wait to build it! But will other people be as excited as you are? We advocate for research to find that out. Building a mobile app can cost anywhere from many tens of thousands to over a million dollars, depending on how complex it is. User research can cost just a few thousand dollars and can make the difference between a product or service that people use, and one where people think ‘nice idea, but I wouldn't use it.’ Investing in user research is the fastest (and cheapest) way to understand whether people want your idea, and reduce your risk. Read Andrew Joel's blog "How user research helps check there's a market for your product - before you've even built it," to find out more. ???? Link in the comments.
