Today, we recognize International Day of the Girl—a global moment to affirm girls' human rights and celebrate their power worldwide. ?? At Panorama Strategy, we’re proud to partner with leaders committed to creating a world where girls are safe and have the ability to live out their full potential. On this day, we want to highlight critical issues impacting girls around the world and celebrate some of the organizations working tirelessly to address them. ? Access to Education: Nearly 120 million girls worldwide are out of school due to factors like child labor, discrimination, and inadequate access to education. The Malala Fund is equipping a new generation of education activists, investing in girls and local organizations as they break through barriers and advocate for lasting change. ? Child Marriage: Each year, more than 12 million girls under 18 marry in legal and traditional ceremonies, violating their human rights and severely limiting their educational and economic opportunities. Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage brings together 1,400+ civil society organizations to exchange learnings, raise awareness, and mobilize the financial and political support needed around the world to end child marriage. ? ? Representation: As of 2023, only about 26% of parliamentary seats globally are held by female representatives, highlighting significant underrepresentation in political decision-making. Running Start empowers young women with the confidence, skills, and networks they need to run for office through initiatives such as their leadership summit for women from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. ? ? Childhood Sexual Violence: One in nine girls under 18 experience childhood sexual assault and abuse. The ToZero initiative, funded by the Oak Foundation, The Indigo Trust, and Phillips Foundation, is uniting stakeholders worldwide to create a path toward ending childhood sexual violence. ? Mental Health and Wellbeing: Girls are 2.5 times more likely than boys to experience depression and anxiety during adolescence, often due to factors like social media influence and gender-based expectations. Black Girls Smile Inc. has supported more than 10,000 Black women and girls through their mental health literacy programming, intersectionality workshops, and their therapy scholarship program. To tackle these pressing issues, we need the collective strength of our global community. We are excited to announce a new funding opportunity from The Type 1 Diabetes Community Fund, in partnership with The Helmsley Charitable Trust. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a complex chronic disease that is challenging to manage in any setting. Crucial gaps in health services mean that #T1D can be a fatal diagnosis for many in low- and middle-income countries. Panorama Global partnered with The Helmsley Charitable Trust to launch The Type 1 Diabetes Community Fund to strengthen the ecosystem of community-based type 1 diabetes organizations in low- and middle-income countries. What a whirlwind time in NYC during #UNGA79 and Climate Week! From events to meetings and networking moments, my umbrella and walking shoes were definitely put to good use. The days were long, but the inspiration was endless. A highlight was emceeing The Panorama Group’s Leadership Forum: Navigating Complexities, Inspiring Action, where more than 150 changemakers came together in midtown on a Sunday. Collaboration was the theme of the day—and it was a common thread throughout the week. Are we truly sharing best practices? Are we connecting resources—talent, treasure, ties—to advance social progress? That’s the real “dot connecting.” While the whole week was special, one moment reminded me of the power of community. So many events were beyond capacity, and lines were long. At one event, a group of us waiting in line decided to just ditch (we'd get the recording later) and grab drinks nearby. Seven people who may never have met otherwise, ended up having an amazing night in conversation. Pure magic! ?? A few other takeaways: ?? At our Leadership Forum, climate change and environmental sustainability topped a live poll of global threats that philanthropy should prioritize in the next five years. But only 1-2% of climate finance incorporates a gender lens, despite the fact that women are 14x more likely to die in natural disasters. ?? Angela Nguku’s powerful call at a Devex and MSD event: "Move with respect, dignity, and speed" to improve maternal health outcomes. She inspires me! ?? The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace will soon release research, commissioned by the Colmena Fund for Women’s Political Power, detailing setbacks and progress for women in this super-election year. Sobering: 19 countries have already experienced setbacks in women’s rights in 2024. Amidst all the challenges, there are so many reasons to keep the faith. Tirana Hassan reminded us that crises have solutions, and Sana Kapadia said it best: "If we don’t hold optimism and hope in our hearts, we're not going to have a seismic shift." Last week's United Nations General Assembly saw world leaders and philanthropists gather to discuss the greatest challenges facing our world. A question posed throughout the week was "What should philanthropy be doing?" At Panorama's Leadership Forum, an audience poll revealed that the number one emerging threat that philanthropy should prioritize over the next five years is climate change and environmental stability. However, philanthropic funding for climate remains just under 2 percent of all giving worldwide.
