Matthew Rose lost his mother, Estelle, to #pancreaticcancer in 2012. ?? Just two years before that, he lost his sister to ovarian cancer. Both women were BRCA2 positive. Matthew says of his mother, "A native Chicagoan, my mom, Estelle, was a mother of three and a grandmother of five...She loved her family and would do anything for them. She had a wicked sense of humor. And she LOVED “Sex in the City.” She called the cast 'her girls.'" Estelle battled cancer three times in her life. First, breast cancer at 61, which was caught early. Then ovarian cancer, stage III at 69. After going through surgery and chemo, she beat it and reached the four-year survivor milestone. Sadly, soon after, she was diagnosed with stage II pancreatic cancer at 74. She fought for four years before she passed in 2012. Now, Matthew is a #PanCANvolunteer and an advocate for early detection and genetic testing. ?? He says, "Both my mom and sister were BRCA2 positive. My mom did not test for the gene until after she got ovarian cancer in 2003. My sister tested soon after...knowledge is power and other family members can now take control of their health and seek preventive measures to catch cancer early." During Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, Matthew encourages, "Pancreatic cancer is difficult to diagnose and challenging to fight. Know your family history. Talk to your doctor about prevention. Get genetic testing. If you smoke, please quit. Exercise. Eat right." Read Matthew and Estelle's story at https://pcan.at/qs1py2. ?? #PanCANawareness

Our Chief Scientific and Medical Officer, Anna Berkenblit, MD, MMSc, has penned her first article in a new "Research Spotlight" series where she'll discuss the latest in #pancreaticcancer research from her expert point of view. ???? Early detection of pancreatic cancer is a priority among the research community because we know that people who are diagnosed at an early stage have better outcomes. Dr. Berkenblit details the current early detection research including advancements in blood tests and liquid biopsies and how artificial intelligence (AI) could play a part in improving how we detect the disease.
