"I don’t care how many people sign that f***ing petition." Everyone, CEO Jamie Dimon’s response to the employees who petitioned against J.P. Morgan's five-day office mandate. Had me in the first half, ngl. Some real inspiring leadership.? For a man making $39M a year, coming in "seven days a week" is a pretty sweet deal. But for everyone else? That’s more commuting costs, less time with family, and paying for childcare, house cleaning, and takeout because your job demands everything from you. To me, Dimon seems out of touch with how reality is like for most people. Where’s the empathy? This conversation also usually goes around whether remote work makes employees more vs. less productive. See, the problem is already in the question. First, inefficiency isn’t about where people work, it’s about how companies operate. I’m sorry you had to go through 14 committees to get a $2,000 team dinner approved. Second, and more importantly, why don’t we ask instead whether remote work helps people live better lives or not? Dimon is rolling out this mandate at the same time JPMorgan is laying off about around 1,000 employees (with more planned), posting record profits, and giving him an 8.5% CEO salary bump. Are we cutting inefficiencies just to help these businesses go faster and generate more and more wealth for its shareholders and executives so that maybe, just maybe, a tiny bit might “trickle down?” It’s certainly not to make the world a better place. An older business owner told me that back when he used to work for an investment firm, he had invited his boss to his wedding. Companies used to invest in your life because they knew you as a person. Now? I mean, Jamie Dimon said it himself: if you don’t like it, leave. “You can walk with your feet.” The future of work shouldn’t be about control—it should be about reciprocity. The small independently owned businesses Panbo works with values workers as people, not just line items on a balance sheet. And in return, employees speak highly of their bosses, without the need for omnipresent employee surveillance systems. If coming into the office everyday works for you, you should be able to. If working from home is best for you, you should be able to. My intuition is that having both of these options wouldn't be a problem for the company...if the company treats its workers well, if you feel fulfilled working there, and if there's mutual trust and respect between the company and you.
