??? Happy Thanksgiving! Take a moment to savor Norman Rockwell’s 1943 "Freedom From Wan"—an iconic portrait of Thanksgiving that’s graced households across the U.S. for decades. First published in "The Saturday Evening Post," Rockwell’s painting showcases a family gathered around a table overflowing with food, a scene made all the more personal by featuring his own friends and neighbors from Arlington, Vermont. Yet, this beloved artwork almost never made it to print. After reading the essay by Carlos Bulosan that would accompany Freedom From Want—a heartfelt piece reflecting on hardship and resilience—Rockwell worried his cozy depiction might come across as tone-deaf. But after some encouragement from his editor, he completed the painting, which later helped raise a staggering $132 million in war bonds. Rockwell’s love of art history shines here too. Inspired by da Vinci’s "Last Supper," he made the Thanksgiving turkey the focal point, echoing a classic composition and transforming the holiday meal into a symbol of abundance and togetherness. ??
