Professional Background: Maria holds an MS/EdS in Career Counseling from Florida State University and a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and English Literature from Pakistan. Personal Interests: "I enjoy cooking and sometimes just taking the time to do nothing at all. Elevate Your LinkedIn – 8 Changes to Make TODAY! Your LinkedIn is one of your most powerful tools in your job search and ongoing career – but only if used correctly! In order to take advantage of all that LinkedIn can offer, see below for changes to make TODAY in how you use the platform. Update your profile: ? Update your headline?– Instead of “Student at Virginia Tech”, try a version with your major, class level, position you are seeking, certifications, skills, clubs, etc.?Example: “Cybersecurity Junior at Virginia Tech | Seeking Internship Summer 2025 | Comp TIA Security + | Cybersecurity Club”. When a recruiter is viewing your profile on LinkedIn Recruiter, they will see your name, photo, and headline. Make the most of this section of your profile! ? Add the “Open to Work” banner to your profile photo?– On your profile page, click “Open To”, and after filling out all relevant information, click “All LinkedIn Members”. ? Add skills?– This is different from a resume, you can showcase your technical AND power skills here. Pro tip: spend some time endorsing your colleagues’ skills, they might just return the favor! How you use the platform: ?? Use the search bar to search “I’m Hiring + [job title/company]”?– Your results will include open positions AND the people connected to those positions! Comment or message your interest and connect with that individual. ?? Connect with alumni in your desired industry?– Search “Virginia Tech + [industry or company]. Send them a quick message similar to “Hi _______, I am a VT student studying [major]. I saw that you work as a [job title] for [company], I would love to connect!” ?? Interact and comment on your connections’ posts?– Others will see your activity on their feed, exposing you to more people and opportunities! This step really does matter for LinkedIn, you would be surprised what can come of supporting your connections and putting your name out there. ? Invite professionals to coffee chats?– Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and ask for a quick 5 minute call! Be prepared with questions and try to avoid directly asking for help getting a job.
