On this World Environment Day, it's important to recognize the significant impact climate change has on our health. As highlighted in a recent article by News9Live, climate change is linked to several diseases. Among these, the risk of hypothyroidism is of particular concern. Changes in temperature and environmental stressors can disrupt thyroid function, leading to a range of health issues. Thyroid medications are already the most prescribed drug in the country, growing at a high 5% CAGR. Could climate change be the sole reason? At Paloma Health, we understand that hypothyroid patients face relatively high total care costs due to various comorbidities directly resulting from an underactive thyroid. Along these lines, a new study in Springer Nature Group highlights how hypothyroidism increases the risk of osteoporosis and related fractures, one of the many health issues linked to low thyroid function and an expensive one. By 2025, osteoporosis is predicted to cause approximately three million fractures, accounting for?$25.3 billion in annual costs. Another reason why we need personalized treatment for hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's! Among our patients, depression ranks as one of the top three symptoms of these conditions. In fact, 60% of those with hypothyroidism experience some form of anxiety and depression. Recent research underscores this connection, revealing significant findings about the relationship between Major Depression Disorder and thyroid diseases. The study highlights a strong causal association between Major Depression Disorder and hypothyroidism, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis in individuals of European ancestry. Science ??: Traditional studies of human biology often focus on the male body, leading to a limited understanding of sex-based biological differences. This results in fewer and less effective treatments specifically designed for women. 2. Data ??: The health issues affecting women are frequently underestimated, with many datasets excluding or undervaluing critical conditions that predominantly affect women. 3. Care Delivery ????: Women frequently encounter barriers to accessing care, experience delays in diagnosis, and often receive suboptimal treatment compared to men. 4. Investment ??: There has historically been less investment in health conditions that primarily affect women, perpetuating a cycle of inadequate scientific understanding and insufficient data to support new investments.
