Palestinian American Medical Association "PAMA"

On November 21, 2024, PAMA was recognized by the Kansas City Council for its humanitarian efforts in Gaza and the region. Chairman of the Board, Dr. Majdi Hamarshi, accepted the recognition on behalf of the organization. The Council commended PAMA's courageous and invaluable humanitarian efforts in Gaza, recognizing its deep roots in the Kansas City community and the heroic contributions of its 18,000+ members, including 1,000 in the Kansas area. PAMA was praised for continuing its life-saving medical missions to Gaza despite significant challenges. This resolution is testimony of PAMA’s efforts to build bridges among communities in the USA and Palestine and calls for solidarity and unity to continue humanitarian efforts to those who need it the most.

PAMA aims to provide comprehensive oversight of the health and mental well-being of individuals living in shelters across Gaza. The specific objective of the Mobile Health Clinic project with Juzoor for Health and Social Development is to minimize the impact of medical conditions and psychological distress of internally-displaced people. Project goals will be achieved through the implementation of various activities, such as supporting mobile health teams, procuring medical kits and medications, conducting psychological first aid services for children and adults, and providing psychological first aid kits.

PAMA is thrilled to announce the addition of Dr. Thaer Ahmad to our Board of Directors. An accomplished emergency medicine physician, Dr. Ahmad brings remarkable expertise in clinical practice, medical education, and global health. Dr. Ahmad completed his emergency medicine specialty training in Detroit and currently serves as an attending physician and Assistant Program Director at Advocate Christ. Dr. Ahmad serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Illinois. His specialized training in humanitarian response, including certifications from Johns Hopkins and Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, aligns perfectly with PAMA's mission of delivering critical medical relief. We are confident that Dr. Ahmad's depth of experience and passion for global health will be instrumental in advancing our organizational goals. We look forward to the valuable perspectives and strategic insights Dr. Ahmad will bring to our board.

Along with providing psychosocial support across Gaza, our partnership with Juzoor for Health and Social Development includes health services. The health services offered include: * Pediatric nutrition program * Screening for malnutrition * Primary care and pediatric health care services * Wound dressing and nursing services * Free medications for patients * Early child development program including workshops for mothers * Psychosocial support for women and children Through this comprehensive approach, we aim to address the complex needs of vulnerable populations in Gaza and the West Bank, and empower them to overcome the challenges helping them rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.

As part of PAMA's mission to support psychosocial rehabilitation across Gaza and the West Bank, we are proud to partner with Juzoor for Health and Social Development. The Palestinian American Medical Association "PAMA" and UNDP Palestinian signed an agreement to provide emergency support to Al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital in the Gaza Strip. This new two-year project, worth USD 3.4 million, will focus on enhancing the hospital’s resilience and operational capacity The ongoing war has devastated Gaza’s health sector, with over 60% of facilities destroyed or inoperable by September 2024, leaving only 17 of 36 hospitals partially functioning. Rising injuries and severe shortages of trauma and essential health supplies have overwhelmed hospitals like Al-Ahli, severely limiting life-saving care. Restricted access for emergency teams further disrupts critical services, including obstetric care, chronic disease management, and infection treatment, while waste accumulation and water contamination heighten health risks for the population In response to the unprecedented challenges facing Gaza's health system, this partnership will strengthen access to essential trauma services and enhance Al-Ahli Hospital's capacity to deliver critical healthcare. The project will be implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health, World Health Organization, and the Health Cluster, aligning with both national and international health strategies. It will focus on rehabilitating and operationalizing the ICU and operating rooms, deploying health staff, and building medical staff capacity, while also creating job opportunities for health workers and ensuring the continuity of essential health services in #Gaza https://go.undp.org/oao

PAMA was honored to participate in the 2024 WHO EMT Global Meeting in Abu Dhabi this week. Our Director of Programs, Sarah Elghalban, addressed the critical session on “Complex Humanitarian Emergencies,” focusing on “Supporting Essential Health Services in Gaza Using Specialized Care Teams”. Sarah detailed the significant access challenges and innovative solutions in deploying MHPSS for healthcare workers in Gaza. She emphasized the vital role of international NGOs in enhancing the effectiveness of Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) in complex crises. PAMA is committed to advancing healthcare and humanitarian response through innovation and continued collaboration with the WHO and International and local partners.
