Where the Earth comes to Life!
关于我们
PRI has outstanding programs in research, collections, publications, and Earth science education as well as two public venues for education -- Museum of the Earth and Cayuga Nature Center. The Institution cares for a collection of nearly three million specimens and publishes Bulletins of American Paleontology, the oldest paleontological journal in the Western Hemisphere, begun in 1895. PRI is a national leader in the development of informal (i.e., outside the classroom) Earth science education resources for educators and the general public. PRI’s Museum of the Earth takes visitors on a journey through 4.5 billion years of history, from the Earth’s origin to the present day. Through hands-on, visual exhibitions and outreach, the Museum of the Earth encourages critical thinking about life on Earth in the past and today, and how our species is affecting the natural world. In 2013, the Cayuga Nature Center became PRI's newest public venue for education. The goal is to transform the Nature Center into a premier educational center for teaching and learning about the impact of climate change on the fauna and flora of Tompkins County. PRI is separate from, but formally affiliated with Cornell University, and interacts closely with numerous University departments in research, teaching, and public outreach.

The event is free and exclusively for teachers. This year's giveaway will include resources from two gifts to PRI specifically for Teacher Resource Day: - Minerals, rocks, and fossils from the collection of Martin Pope, a long-time distinguished professor of solid-state physics at NYU, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 103. - Glassware and other lab materials from Wells College which closed in June of this year. In addition to the resource giveaway, there are tours of PRI's extensive collections, the Museum of the Earth, our new Blaschkas Exhibit and our current temporary exhibit, NY Rocks! on the rocks and fossils of Upstate New York. This year's featured presentation, "On Blashka Models, Biodiversity, and Evolution," will be given by Dr. Leslie Babonis, Assistant Professor of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at Cornell Univerisity. We'll also hear about the Autumn BioBlitz in a short presentation. This BioBlitz begins on Friday, October 11th and runs through Sunday, October 13th, intentionally surrounding Teacher Resource Day. The first 50 registrants receive a gift bag! If registration exceeds 50, we will maintain a waiting list. If you register and find yourself unable to attend, please let us know. Join Our Virtual Workshop on Climate Model Ensembles! We are excited to announce an upcoming virtual workshop led by Dr. Brown-Steiner, where you'll dive deep into the fascinating world of climate model ensembles! ?? Date: Wednesday, May 22nd ?? Time: 5:00 EDT Overview of Climate Model Ensembles: Dr. Brown-Steiner will provide an insightful overview of how these models are configured, their various forms, and the challenges involved in running, analyzing, and interpreting them. Group Discussions and Q&A: Engage in group discussions, ask questions, and learn from others in the field. We'll collectively summarize, compare, and interpret our model results. Key Takeaways: - Understand the value of different forms of climate model ensembles. - Explore uncertainties and potential pathways within individual models. - Gain confidence in interpreting future climate projections. - Learn to balance clear communication with technical details. This workshop will feature short presentations, interactive components, and plenty of opportunities for questions and discussions. This workshop is designed for teachers and other educators but all are welcome to join. ?? You might have heard projections of future climate such as "sea level around Long Island is expected to rise by 1 - 6 feet by the end of this century" or "New York State can expect more winter precipitation falling as rain instead of snow by the year 2100." How do scientists arrive at these projections? You can now read and learn about this on Earth@Home, in a new section about climate modeling written by PRI Research Associate Ben Brown-Steiner: https://lnkd.in/ecMHCSpw
