Join us tomorrow night, Thursday, March 13, at 7pm for Science in the Virtual Pub with Dr. Geoffrey Abers from Cornell University. Fishing for the faults that make the biggest earthquakes Earthquakes bigger than magnitude 9.0 all happen on the planet’s largest faults, where oceanic plates are subducting beneath continents. The earthquakes are big because the faults allow earthquakes to rupture unimpeded for hundreds of kilometers. We have been trying to understand what allows these monster earthquakes by imaging the region around these faults, using seismic waves generated by earthquakes. I will discuss results in the context of a very large project off the coast of Alaska, the Alaska Amphibious Community Seismic Experiment, which we ran in 2018-2019, coincidentally just before a sequence of magnitude 7.6 – 8.2 earthquakes in 2020-2021. This project put large numbers of instruments on the seafloor and on land for over a year, fishing for earthquake signals. Register at https://lnkd.in/eytM3PBM

Where the Earth comes to Life!
关于我们
PRI has outstanding programs in research, collections, publications, and Earth science education as well as two public venues for education -- Museum of the Earth and Cayuga Nature Center. The Institution cares for a collection of nearly three million specimens and publishes Bulletins of American Paleontology, the oldest paleontological journal in the Western Hemisphere, begun in 1895. PRI is a national leader in the development of informal (i.e., outside the classroom) Earth science education resources for educators and the general public. PRI’s Museum of the Earth takes visitors on a journey through 4.5 billion years of history, from the Earth’s origin to the present day. Through hands-on, visual exhibitions and outreach, the Museum of the Earth encourages critical thinking about life on Earth in the past and today, and how our species is affecting the natural world. In 2013, the Cayuga Nature Center became PRI's newest public venue for education. The goal is to transform the Nature Center into a premier educational center for teaching and learning about the impact of climate change on the fauna and flora of Tompkins County. PRI is separate from, but formally affiliated with Cornell University, and interacts closely with numerous University departments in research, teaching, and public outreach.

Join us tonight night, Thursday, February 27th, from 7:00pm - 8:30pm EST for Science in the Virtual Pub! This evenings presentation is hosted by Sylvia Reeves, NIDIS Regional Drought Information Coordinator (Northeast DEWS) | Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences | University of Colorado Boulder | NOAA | National Integrated Drought Information System. We are all too familiar with the impacts of foods, nor'easters, ice storms, derechos, tornadoes, hurricanes, and even atmospheric rivers of rain or snow but most of us would not rank drought high on our list of natural hazards of major concern. Let's take a minute or two to rethink that... This presentation will cover some of the history of drought, impacts of drought in the US in the past 10 years and the focus of research and inquiry on monitoring drought, drought outlooks, impacts and resilience strategies for the future. PRI Featured in Science Magazine We are honored to be featured in Science magazine, even if the the story is a sobering one. The article, “Financial Peril Could Doom Famed New York Paleontological Institute,” highlights the urgent challenges we face as we continue our mission of advancing Earth science education, research, and public engagement. PRI has been a trusted resource for science research and learning for decades—through our Museum of the Earth, extensive fossil collections, and online education initiatives. We need the help of our community now more than ever to ensure our future.
