The City of Ventura's Public Works Department first received accreditation through the American Public Works Association in 2014. They were one of the first agencies in California to do so. In 2025 the agency was re-accredited. I was honored to be invited to speak in front of the City Council and present the public works department with their re-accreditation. Congratulations to Public Works Director Charles Ebeling, past national president and City of Ventura Deputy Public Works Director Mary Joyce Ivers along with all the employees of the department for this tremendous achievement. I also very much appreciated the tour of the historic City of Ventura City Hall. Making these presentations and highlighting the amazing work our public works departments are doing, day in and day out, is one of my favorite things to do as a regional director. #apwa #accredidation

Earlier this week, Pakpour Consulting Group, Inc. team members attended an engaging and informative workshop hosted by the APWA Silicon Valley Chapter on “Essential Elements of Construction Inspection.”  It was almost a full day dedicated to learning — from expert insights in construction management to local experiences in paving and underground utility inspections. The day wrapped up with a dynamic panel of three very seasoned professionals sharing real-world lessons learned, thoughtful discussions, and valuable takeaways. My first time attending the sold-out APWA Southern California Chapter's PWX conference. What an incredible turnout, over 600 public works professionals, at all levels, attended the one-day event. Some of the highlights included the lunchtime presentation of Shahnawaz Ahmad's National Top Ten Public Works Leader Award. His daughters were in attendance and surprised him by wearing special t-shirt! APWA CEO Scott Grayson, CAE moderate a panel regarding the Los Angeles area wildfires with Deputy Public Works Director for Los Angeles County Luis Ramirez, Architect, Los Angeles City Engineer, Ted Allen, and Malibu Environmental Sustainability Director/Building Official, Yolanda Bundy. They spoke about first responders, agency collaboration among federal, state, county and city agencies and lessons learned. Great to see past national APWA national presidents Keith Pugh, PE, PWLF, Mary Joyce Ivers and president elect Vic Bianes. Best Single Takeaway: These one or two-day conferences are a great way to bring out public works operation and maintenance staff for collaboration and training. Great to see so many orange shirts in attendance! About the Southern California Chapter: Founded in 1951, the SoCal chapter is the largest of the eleven chapters in region 8 with a membership close to 1,500, representing over 25% of the membership of the entire region. #apwa #pwx

Did you know...Our president Joubin Pakpour, PE skis nearly 30 days a year? He and his family travel the world in chase of the fluffy, white gold. He has skied over 70 different ski resorts, and they routinely follow the snow to Chile, Argentina and New Zealand during our summers. Both his children were on skis as soon as they could walk at 15 and 17 months old. Joubin caught the ski bug from his parents, who are still hitting the slopes in their 80s. His favorite quote continues to be: “Of all the books in the world, the best stories are found between the pages of a passport.” Any guesses on his favorite resort?

Pi is a mathematical constant representing the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. In 2021, the value of Pi was calculated to an astounding 62 trillion digits!   Pi plays a crucial role in various engineering disciplines. From calculating areas and volumes of circular and cylindrical shapes, such as pipes or tanks, to solving pipe flow equations that account for the curvature and cross-sectional areas, Pi is used every day in countless applications!   At Pakpour Consulting Group, Inc., we celebrate both the fun and science behind Pi with delicious hand pies!

Public Works visibility comes in all shapes and sizes. This past weekend my family and I took a road trip from our home base of South Lake Tahoe to the community of Incline Village on the North side of Lake Tahoe to ski one of the last community owned ski areas in the basin, Diamond Peak Ski Resort. We saw this sign while filling up our water bottles in the base lodge. Kudos to the public works department of Incline Village General Improvement District (IVGID) for their work in promoting the amazing tasting water in Lake Tahoe and increasing visibility of Public Works professionals who work tirelessly to design, build and maintain the infrastructure we all rely on every day. And.... This month's #employeespotlight features Diana Cangco who joined us in January 2025 after 20 years of dedicated service in local government. She brings a wealth of experience in land development and has a strong background in this area. Diana holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from UC Irvine, and a Certificate in Construction Management from California State University - East Bay. Outside of her professional life, Diana is married to Travis, also a Civil Engineer, and together they have two wonderful children, Abigail and Oliver. The family shares a love for travel, having explored 16 countries so far. They enjoy immersing themselves in the local culture, language, and cuisine of the places they visit. Wherever they may be, Diana and Travis always find a way to incorporate “civil engineering marvels” into their adventures. On November 23, 2024, the City of Dublin, CA celebrated the opening of the Iron Horse Regional Trail Crossing at Dublin Boulevard. The City retained Pakpour Consulting Group, Inc. to provide project management services to ensure the project was delivered collaboratively and within the $14 million budget. The 230-ft span provides pedestrians and bicyclists direct access to the Dublin/Pleasanton BART station. The project was years in the making, with construction beginning in 2022.   We worked closely with the contractor and various project partners in delivering the new bridge structure for Iron Horse Regional Trail Users. Pakpour Consulting Group, Inc. worked with Alameda County Transportation Commission (ACTC) and BART in meeting all the project funding requirements. Pakpour Consulting Group, Inc. has provided on-call services to the City of Dublin, CA since 2010. Services include private development review, project design, project management, construction management, construction inspection and as-needed staff augmentation. Working as an extension of City staff, we adhere to in-house procedures, process and established schedules. Construction management and staff augmentation services have included assistance with planning and pre-construction activities, coordination with the designer, public outreach, management of the scope of work, schedule and budget of other City consultants, and acting as the City representative and liaison with outside public agencies.

This month's #employeespotlight features Hamed Khatibi who joined us in 2024, bringing over 15 years of experience in both academia and industry across three different countries before settling here in the United States. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in Iran, where he gained hands-on experience as a site supervisor, working alongside his brother, a professional Civil Engineer who inspired him to enter this field. Hamed completed his Master of Science in Structural Engineering & Construction at Universiti Putra Malaysia. During his time in Malaysia, which spanned nearly a decade, he worked as a lecturer and faculty coordinator at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology and as a researcher at the University of Malaya. His dedication to innovation earned him a full scholarship for a PhD in Civil Engineering at the The University of Auckland, New Zealand. Over five years in New Zealand, he completed his PhD and worked as a Projects & Operations Engineer at Aimecs Engineering, successfully managing complex projects and delivering high-quality outcomes. Throughout his journey to the United States, Hamed was granted eight patents in seismic mitigation systems and developed an innovative framework for evaluating smart and resilient cities. His work has been published in several high-ranking journals, and his contributions are widely cited by many scientists in the field. He also received numerous awards from various competitions, symposiums, and exhibitions. Outside of his professional life, Hamed enjoys playing soccer, exploring new places, and visiting shopping malls. He’s a foodie who loves BBQing for friends, bringing people together for good food and conversation. Hamed was raised with core values of humility, respect, and loyalty by his parents, who taught him to approach every role with dedication and to always put his heart into his work. These principles continue to guide him every day. We are thrilled to welcome him to Pakpour Consulting Group, Inc. as an Assistant Engineer. With his extensive international experience, we are excited to see the fresh perspectives and values he will bring to our team. Hamed’s diverse background will be a great asset as we continue to drive innovation and excellence in our projects.
