The Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency (PV Water) is a state-chartered water management district formed to efficiently and economically manage existing and supplemental water supplies in order to prevent further increases in, and to accomplish continuing reduction of, long-term overdraft. PV Water also works to provide and ensure sufficient water supplies for present and future anticipated needs within its boundaries, generally the greater coastal Pajaro Valley.

The program featured an insightful panel, followed by an overview of Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency and tour of the Watsonville Area Water Recycling Facility. PV Water focuses on providing enough water supply for irrigation so that farms valley-wide will rely significantly less on groundwater, especially in the coastal region of the groundwater basin where seawater intrusion is most severe. This will help sustain the groundwater supply for the entire Pajaro Valley.?
Since 1984, the Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency has accomplished key milestones for sustainable groundwater management, including developing hydrologic models to simulate the use and movement of water and basis for the construction of water supply facilities that do the most to reduce seawater intrusion and stop groundwater overdraft, like the Recycled Water Facility, 22 miles of Coastal Distribution System Pipeline, Harkins Slough Recharge and Recovery Project and the College Lake Water Supply Project to name a few! "Recharge Net Metering" (ReNeM)?provides?a?novel,?cost-effective,?decentralized solution to increase stormwater infiltration in the Pajaro Valley of California. Unlike traditional approaches,?“ReNeM helps to incentivize projects and participants to collect stormwater runoff generated during big winter rain events and percolate that water into aquifers,” said Molly Bruce, lead author of the study and?a research fellow at Center for Law, Energy & the Environment at Berkeley Law.?This incentive aligns individual interests with collective groundwater benefits?and has demonstrated promising results since its initiation in 2016.? Tanner Pacific, Inc. (TPI) is currently providing construction Management and inspection services for Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency’s (PV Water) $68M College Lake Project. This project has three distinct interdependent system elements: the Weir Structure and Intake Pump Station, Water Treatment Plant, and College Lake Pipeline. ? Recent project updates include completion of the concrete placement in the creek channel and the new intake pump station adjacent to the creek wall is under construction. The new robust Weir Structure will modulate elevation and integrates a fish passage allowing fish to enter and exit College Lake during migration significantly reducing risks to fish within the pump intake structure. ? The College Lake project will help achieve sustainable groundwater management of the Pajaro Valley Groundwater Subbasin and help to mitigate future hydrologic changes due to climate change. Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency was recently visited by the The New York Times! We are proud to be working with an agency focused on creative solutions to challenging environmental projects. ? “In Pajaro, farmers must pay for the precious resource through a system that creates an incentive to conserve water, and that also raises revenue that goes toward recycling water to use on crops. The system has reduced groundwater usage in the valley by 20 percent and could serve as a model for how to conserve water across the United States.” ? “I was really impressed with how well this solution actually worked in the Pajaro Valley. I think a lot of it is specific to the conditions of the place, the people and the economy, but it gave me hope that there is a clear, demonstrable solution to this oncoming crisis, if people are willing to face it head-on.” ? Construction on the College Lake Water Supply pipeline through the Highway 129-Riverside Drive is underway. This work will take about six months and will cause traffic impacts. The completed pipeline will transport treated water from College Lake to coastal farmland, helping to stop seawater intrusion while supporting agriculture and improving habitat for endangered steelhead.
