We are thrilled to share that Ms. Ankeetaa Mahesshwari, Associate Fellow at Pahlé India Foundation (PIF), recently presented an insightful overview of India’s legal framework on lead poisoning at a global forum hosted by the Center for Global Development. While India has numerous laws and regulations aimed at mitigating lead poisoning, their impact remains limited. The current legal framework in India addressing lead poisoning operates in silos and requires urgent attention. Strengthening these laws is crucial to combat lead poisoning effectively. The following recommendations could help India develop a more comprehensive and effective strategy to protect public health and create a safer environment for all: ? Targeted Regulation for specific industries known to contribute lead poisoning (e.g., battery recycling) ? Periodic reviews and updates to update and review legal provisions related to lead poisoning. ? Coordination among various ministries and agencies involved in lead regulation to mitigate inefficiencies caused by fragmented regulatory effects. ? Strengthening enforcement mechanisms with stricter penalties for violations. ? Incentives for encouraging compliance and promote safer practices in lead and related industries. ? Public awareness campaign for creating awareness about preventive measures and risks associated with lead contaminated products. ? Establish a national lead registry to monitor blood lead levels in at-risk populations. Our report, "Lead Poisoning: A Review of the Indian Legal Framework and International Frameworks," delves deeper into these challenges, provides recommendations and highlights global best practices.
