What doesn't Portland do well? We are home to so many top world creative agencies with the best talent. Today, I attended a final design sprint presentations that was put together by Jelani Memory and Stephen Green and their Vanport Studio . They collaborated with the top teams at Instrument and provided tangible value to three local startups - from marketing campaign, new product/service line and new website design. What Our Kickstarter Campaign Taught Me Launching a Kickstarter campaign forces you to act, even when things aren’t perfect. We just wrapped up a successful 30-day campaign with?Pacmodo, more than tripling our goal with the support of over 100 backers—all with no real marketing budget. We could have waited for perfect prototypes, fancy photos, or a top-tier video. But at some point, you stop waiting and start building with what you have—and that’s where the magic happens! My Key Takeaways ?Gaps & Growth Kickstarter highlighted where we needed help. Building a team is important, but building the?right?team is essential. The challenges we faced early on were valuable learning opportunities that helped us get the right people in the right seats. ?? Low-Risk Product/Market Fit Kickstarter is a fantastic tool for validating early product/market fit. It shows you who wants to buy your product, where there are misalignments, and provides real-time feedback to course-correct. ?? A Built-In Marketing Strategy We didn’t have a lavish marketing budget ahead of the campaign—near $0 to spend—and guess what? The campaign became our marketing strategy. It proved that sometimes the best marketing is simply getting your product out there. ?? Analytics Matter Kickstarter has a robust suite of analytics tools, and the data and insights we gained were invaluable. Understanding consumer behavior helped us refine our approach, and we’re taking those lessons forward. ?? Community Engagement We were able to have real conversations with our backers—even some hilarious ones! We learned what they love and what they don’t, and that’s something I want to carry over to our digital home—a place for open dialogue with our community. ?? Operational Stress Test End-to-end customer experience is everything. Whether we’re shipping two units or twenty thousand, it’s a great feeling knowing that our operations and logistics infrastructure can handle it. For a DTC-focused startup like Pacmodo, this is just as critical as having an excellent product. ??Fun (and Growth!) Along the Way Was it tough? Absolutely. But you know what? We had a blast! We made new connections, sold product, and grew as individuals, as a team, and as a company. What more could we ask for?
