What is water really worth? It continues to be undervalued and mispriced, many governements around the world struggle to mobilize private sector investment into the water sector, without figuring out it's true value and pricing it correctly it will be difficult to close the water finance gap. Definitely a discussion worth having in South Africa. Read our latest thinking on valuing water ?? https://lnkd.in/g5BsQvCU

Using Innovation to change the future of the Water Industry.

-Are Water Innovation Platforms & Research Institutes Delivering Real Value? Or Are We Just Paying for a Seat at the Table?- ?? The water industry is broken. Not because we lack technology, talent, or urgency but because the innovation ecosystem is fundamentally flawed. ?? Startups struggle to commercialize. ?? Investors hesitate because water has slow adoption cycles and weak market incentives. ?? Meanwhile, research institutes and "innovation promoters" charge premium fees for insights, reports, and networking that often provide little ROI. Think about it: ? In the energy sector, clean tech startups get fast-tracked subsidies, VC funding, and billion-dollar exits. ?? In water? We celebrate pilot projects that take 5+ years to scale—if they ever do. Where Are We Going Wrong? 1?? Water is undervalued—it’s still seen as a cheap, unlimited resource. Unlike energy, there’s no strong price signal to drive investment. 2?? Startups face “pay-to-play” barriers—they’re expected to spend thousands on conferences, reports, and “exclusive networks” to gain visibility. 3?? Risk-averse utilities stifle adoption—most won’t touch new tech without years of validation, while bureaucracy slows everything down. -Do Research Institutes & Innovation Brokers Add Real Value? -Networking organizations claim to drive innovation, but at what cost? -Are they helping startups succeed or just maintaining an exclusive club where only well-funded players thrive? -Are they pushing the industry forward or just recycling the same insights behind a paywall? What Needs to Change? ?? Performance-based funding—More public & private investment tied to real-world adoption, not just research reports. ?? Faster regulatory pathways—If energy & healthcare can fast-track innovation, why is water stuck in decades-old approval processes? ?? Open-source knowledge & real collaboration—Instead of expensive memberships, we need free, accessible platforms for scaling solutions. Are water research firms and innovation promoters worth it? Or do we need a new model? #WaterInnovation #Startups #Sustainability #WaterIndustry #Disruption
