What if we're wrong? . . . I recently had a conversation with my amazing friend, Maya Mitchell, a fellow certified Positive Reinforcement dog trainer. She asked a powerful question: What if we’re wrong? What if we’re wrong about: ?? what our dogs needs? ?? what our dogs are trying to tell us? ?? what our dogs understand? ?? how our dogs feel pain? ?? the best ways to boost canine longevity? ?? the expectations we place on them? There is still so much we don’t know about our dogs. Even though they have been domesticated alongside us for at least 15,000 years, the field of canine cognition is less than 20 years old. Since there’s so much we don’t know, ?we have a responsibility to do the least harm?. That way if we’re wrong, as society has been time and time again, the repercussions will not be as drastic. ?We have a responsibility to reduce the power hierarchy when possible and empower our dogs to make choices. This will strengthen our relationships and improve their quality of life. ?<<< this is one of the key points in the animal ethics paper “How dogs perceive humans and how humans should treat their pet dogs: linking cognition with ethics.” Throughout history we have evolved our understanding. What happened when we were wrong about the sun revolving around the earth? … not much. The earth's and sun's movement weren't impacted. But what happened when society thought (and in many ways still does think) women are inferior to men? What happened when society thought children needed to be penalized to learn? What happens when we have unrealistic expectations on our dogs? That is why it’s our responsibility to choose the most ethical, pain free, and science backed approaches to raising our dogs. It will make us better humans to each other, too. And isn't that something we all want to strive for? That is why I choose to be a pure positive reinforcement trainer and fear free. Interrupting behavior wasn’t enough. I had to replace it with a desirable behavior for effective results. Am I talking about a dog’s behavior or a human’s behavior? It could equally well be either one, and that’s the point ?? This story is about human behavior though… my own behavior… and my life lessons from dog training. *** I sat down to eat a snack in my sunny backyard. I told myself I wouldn’t touch my phone until I finished eating, but I left the phone within reach. How many times do you think I reached for it before interrupting myself? …. Answer: MANY times! But then I took a deep breath and started looking at how the sun was shining through the pergola. How my dog’s long ears fanned out on the ground where she was resting near me. The texture of the crunchy apple. I replaced the thoughts that would motivate me to reach for my phone with thoughts that helped me achieve my goal. And it worked. Of course until I wanted to give Maggie the last bite of my Apple and record some ASMR of her chewing it. Here it is for your viewing pleasure ??
