At Pacific Gas and Electric Company, building resilience against #wildfires never stops and public-private #partnerships plus new #technology play an important role. ? PG&E recently hosted the first public test of BurnBot, Inc.’s #nextgen controlled burn machine (the RX2), which aims to harness the power of prescribed fire with #precision and #control for #wildfiremitigation and #ecosystem benefit. PG&E is exploring BurnBot’s?#firetech?solutions: ? Potential alternative to mowers in managing grassland, shrubs ? Creating fuel break lines in place of herbicides or dozers ? Manage invasive species, herbicide-resistant weeds around electric infrastructure The RX2 is designed to apply prescribed burns in a way that creates very little smoke and is highly controlled, allowing the use of ecological fire to treat potentially hazardous vegetation near critical infrastructure. Officials from Oakland Fire Department, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), California Air Resources Board, Office of Energy Infrastructure Safety, plus other emergency responders and stakeholders were onsite to witness the first test of the RX2.

Brad Carr has spent 23 years in a wheelchair. “My chair is old enough to have a drink,” he says. The manager of #gaspipeline #engineering and #design was paralyzed from the chest down due to a car accident. But his sense of #humor has helped his relationships with fellow #coworkers and #contractors. Thanks to his power wheelchair with tracks and accommodations by Pacific Gas and Electric Company to his workstation, Carr can effectively manage eight direct reports and 45 design engineers. October’s #DisabilityAwarenessMonth means a lot to him. “There’s a need to make allowances so people like me can participate on the job,” he says. #disabilityawareness #disabilitywork #disability #disabilityinclusion #deib

“Mutual aid is a hallmark of the utility industry,” says Angie Gibson, PG&E’s Vice President of Emergency Preparedness & Response. “Other utilities share the same customer focus that we have here at PG&E. When the chips are down, we start our crews and blue trucks rolling to help. And other companies do the same for us when we need assistance.” Pacific Gas and Electric Company has sent more than 400 #electric workers, support personnel and equipment to #Georgia to assist restoring power after devastating #HurricaneHelene. The crews will join Georgia Power Company utility workers and others from around #NorthAmerica in supporting the #restoration effort. The Edison Electric Institute, an electric-utility member organization, said on Tuesday that nearly 50,000 #electric workers from at least 40 states and #Canada are dedicated to the Hurricane Helene #response and #powerrestoration effort, making this one of the nation’s largest #mutualassistance mobilizations ever. ? In total, Helene impacted nearly 6 million electric #customers in 10 states.?As of Wednesday afternoon, power has been restored to approximately 4.51 million customers—or 75.1 percent of customers, EEI said. “IBEW local 1245 is extremely proud that our members will be traveling to Georgia to assist in the restoration of power. Their willingness to help those facing the devastation of Hurricane Helene is selfless,” says Bob Gerstle, the union’s senior assistant business manager. PG&E has gotten support from Cal OES, Caltrans, California Highway Patrol, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), County of Yolo and the City of Davis to facilitate the rapid deployment of the #mutualaid effort. Peter Kenny, PG&E’s Senior Vice President of Electric Operations, says, “It’s heartbreaking to see the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. I am so thankful for our PG&E coworkers – serving those in need in Georgia and those continuing to serve our hometowns here in California.”
