PI-CASC is designed to support sustainability and climate adaptation science across the Pacific.
关于我们
The Pacific Islands Climate Adaptation Science Center (PI-CASC) was established by the Department of the Interior (DOI) on October 7, 2011 to address the challenges presented by climate change and variability for federal, state, nongovernmental, community, indigenous Pacific Islanders, and resource managers. PI-CASC spans the Pacific Basin from the Hawaiian Island archipelago to the US-affiliated islands of the South Pacific, including American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. PI-CASC is one of nine regional centers across the United States and is hosted by a university consortium, led by the University of Hawai?i at Mānoa, in cooperation with the University of Hawai?i at Hilo and the University of Guam, bringing the expertise of this university consortium to work with our federal partners from the USGS.

Congratulations to Ihilani Kamau, a Manager Climate Corps graduate scholar who graduated from the University of Hawai?i at Hilo in Fall 2024 with a master’s of science degree. Ihilani worked with Dr. Tracy Wiegner on a project that grew from a community’s concern about sewage pollution off the Kailua-Kona shoreline. We caught up with Ihilani about her project, graduation, and what's next. Read our talk story with Ihilani >> https://lnkd.in/gBtDejFX #studentresearch #climateadaptation #cleanwater #climateaction

We started the new year by welcoming Dr. Ryan Longman as the new PI-CASC Consortium Program Director at the University of Hawai?i at Mānoa! As the new full-time Program Director, he joins our PI-CASC Consortium Executive Director Dr. Darren Lerner, Deputy Director Dr. Brad Romine, and a team of dedicated faculty and staff to lead the implementation of PI-CASC Consortium programs, research, and partnerships defined in the university consortium host agreement, which address the climate adaptation challenges in Hawai?i and the U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands. A project led by researcher Dr. Patrick Hart is utilizing cutting-edge technology and traditional Hawaiian oli, or chant, in his approach to the conservation of endangered native birds. Hart is working with Google to develop a new algorithm that recognizes Hawaiian bird songs from acoustic recordings to monitor bird populations, most of which live in remote, high-elevation forests and are difficult to access. In a parallel project, he is collaborating with cultural practitioner Kekuhi Kanahele Keali‘ikanaka‘oleohaililani and conservation group ?āhuimanu to compose an oli using the framework of the Kumulipo. The oli connects each bird to thriving elements in nature to promote balance and resilience.
