Leadership in action! ?? Our CEO, Viveka Rydell-Anderson JD, MSc, takes time to connect with the heart of our mission—our patients. Whether it’s in the operating room or the lobby, every conversation is a reminder of why we’re here: to bring life-changing vision care to those who need it most. ??? #Leadership #VisionCare #MakingConnections #PacificVisionFoundation Image description: A selfie showing three women inside the PVF lobby. 关于我们
Pacific Vision Foundation (PVF) is dedicated to improving health equity in eye health and vision in collaboration with a community of physicians and other partners providing care and training. In 2020, PVF opened Pacific Vision Surgery Center, a brand-new 2 Operatory Room Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) in our Eye Institute building, to ensure more access to cataract, glaucoma and retina surgeries for patients from Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) referred to our partner Lions Eye Foundation (LEF)/CPMC/Sutter Clinic, which in turn refers patients to PVSC who need surgery, at no cost to them. For more than 40 years PVF has supported the physicians and researchers providing care to the under-served and has provided support services for the Department of Ophthalmology at California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) Residency Program. Our work ensures the next generation of eye care specialists have the expertise they need to build thriving careers, while helping some of the most vulnerable members of our community gain access to sight-saving surgeries. PVF is proud to play a significant role in leading edge training and research, and direct line to access to care as we work towards equity in eye health.

True friends find their way back, even when life pulls you in different directions. In '95, Margreet Nijhof from the Netherlands and I, from Sweden, studied at University of California, Berkeley - School of Law. We bonded over late-night studying and dreams of becoming successful lawyers. Our “American dreams” came true, but life led us down different paths. Margreet excelled at international tax law at Baker McKenzie ... I pursued my career in San Francisco. She moved to Amsterdam... I settled in the wine country north of the city. We both balanced careers while raising 3 children. Called each other from time to time. Today, Margreet has broken barriers in her field: → World-renowned leader in international tax law. → Children’s rights advocate. Last month, she visited me at Pacific Vision Foundation. I gave her a tour of our four business units. She met my team. Then, she asked: “How did you become such a confident leader?” Her praise meant a lot, coming from someone I admire so much. Seeing her again reminded me of our early days as 2 young immigrant women with big dreams. Lifelong friendships are about recognizing and celebrating each other's growth. No matter how time passes or where life leads.

Managing glaucoma goes beyond the office. ?? Dr. Ruth Williams, a proud Barkan Society member and CPMC graduate, highlights the game-changing potential of home tonometry in tracking intraocular pressure (IOP) dynamics. ??? Alongside esteemed colleagues, Dr. Ike Ahmed, Dr. Michael Chaglasian, and Dr. Leon Herndon, she underscores how understanding IOP fluctuations can lead to earlier interventions and improved outcomes. Home monitoring empowers patients and enables personalized care—revolutionizing glaucoma management. ????? #Glaucoma #Ophthalmology #EyeCare #IOP #Tonometry #HomeTonometry #BarkanSociety
The Importance of Home Tonometry in Glaucoma Care Intraocular pressure (IOP) dynamics are critical in managing glaucoma, yet traditional in-office measurements provide only a limited snapshot. Understanding and addressing IOP fluctuations, generally occurring in the early morning outside office hours, is essential for effective glaucoma care. Glaucoma specialists Dr. Ruth Williams, Dr. Ike Ahmed, Dr. Michael Chaglasian, and Dr. Leon Herndon discuss the advancements and benefits of home IOP monitoring. Dr. Ruth Williams, Wheaton Eye Clinic, emphasizes the dynamic nature of IOP, comparing it to heart rate and blood pressure. She highlights the limitations of infrequent office measurements and the importance of understanding IOP variations throughout the day and night. She underscores the significance of home tonometry for patients who appear well-controlled but continue to progress. Detailed data on pressure spikes can support changes in management, timely surgical interventions, and improved outcomes. Dr. Ike Ahmed, John A. Moran Eye Center, explains that IOP is our only modifiable risk factor and stresses the need to measure IOP beyond the office. Harmful IOP peaks often occur outside office hours, potentially leading to significant glaucoma damage. He elaborates on the practical implementation of home tonometry, which can enable us to be proactive before damage occurs. By encouraging patients to use the device consistently, they can obtain a detailed pattern of their IOP, which informs customized treatment plans. Dr. Michael Chaglasian, Illinois College of Optometry, discusses the value of home tonometers in capturing comprehensive eye pressure readings. He notes that identifying peak pressures and understanding IOP fluctuations are crucial for assessing the risk of vision damage from glaucoma. Dr. Leon Herndon, Duke Eye Center, shares his positive experience with MyEyes and the iCare HOME2, highlighting its seamless integration into patient care and the valuable feedback received from patients. Experts agree that home tonometry is transforming glaucoma management, providing better real-world pressure guidance and reducing patients' uncertainties. More and more glaucoma specialists are now using home tonometry before and after surgery, enabling optimized post-operative management to ensure surgical success. This innovative approach enables personalized and more effective treatments, ultimately enhancing patient involvement, care, and outcomes.
