This afternoon, we heard from two researchers noting how it's common to hear concerns about negative environmental impacts from #OffshoreWind, but never about the benefits—of which there are many. Tim Sippel spoke about opportunities for salmon recovery through new monitoring opportunities and habitat reclamation, while Sarah Courbis discussed how whales and seabirds can benefit from infrastructure and collaborations enabled by #OffshoreWind developers. In addition, acknowledging how some notable #OSW developers have begun committing to net-positive biodiversity outcomes in their projects, perhaps it is time to re-frame the way we talk about offshore wind.

How do we communicate about Offshore Wind and reclaim the narrative around it? How do we plan for the needs of our electrical grids and our increasing energy needs with—and without—offshore wind in the mix? And how can we improve west coast collaboration to improve our supply chains, policy priorities, and more? Zach Hyder of Hubbell, David Nightingale, and Stephanie Spence of Washington Maritime Blue / Blue Wind have addressed these topics in their presentations and through the many questions they fielded. This morning, I was honored to be one of the keynote speakers at the Pacific Ocean Energy Trust Northwest Offshore Wind (NOW) conference. Thank you to Jason Busch for moderating a great panel, and to Nicole Hughes and Joshua Kaplowitz for providing a master class in your areas. In my talk, I emphasized the role California is playing in the offshore wind industry, including the role of buying offshore wind, updating transmission rules to unlock more investment to get the power where we need it when we need it, and the critical role regional energy markets will play in decarbonizing the state in an affordable and reliable manner. This is all work that I've been doing Environmental Defense Fund's Energy Transition work. #offshorewind #energy #electricity

In addition, we heard about the experiences and plans from our southern neighbor through Offshore Wind California, with a potential roadmap for other states and governments, following California's successes just in the past year.
