Taking our radiation expertise to new heights ?? A PNNL experiment launched into space this week as part of the Polaris Program. Immediately after splashdown, the experiment will be taken to our Shallow Underground Laboratory, where scientists will study the test materials to learn more about the effects of spaceflight and space radiation on human health.

?? Calling all transmission planners: GDO and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are offering technical assistance through the Inclusive Transmission Planning Project to assist transmission planners in incorporating energy equity as an objective in their planning. This program is open to applicants from Regional Transmission Operators (RTOs), Independent System Operators (ISOs), Power Market Administrators (PMAs), and utilities, and will support a broad set of topics on energy equity that transmission planners could consider and implement in the transmission planning process. Interested in applying? Join us for an informational webinar on September 17 at 1 p.m. ET: https://lnkd.in/eaXcc8Mk

For intern Robert Gomez, this summer was a time of great professional growth. "I have gotten more comfortable interacting with my colleagues and finding solutions to problems with no definitive answers," the physics graduate student from Fisk University says. "While working amongst staff scientists, I've started making many connections between my own work and the wider world." Robert came to PNNL through the Minority Serving Institution Partnership Program (MSIPP) alongside 12 other students, all from communities underrepresented in STEM. Such growth as Robert's can be especially hard-earned for these interns. "The challenges faced by minority students are significant," says data scientist Natasha Arokium-Christian. "I advise them to persevere, regardless of how daunting the situation may appear." ???????????? Over the course of 10 weeks, MSIPP interns were paired with individual mentors in the areas of nuclear, environmental, and radiation research. Their time at PNNL included trainings and experiential opportunities covering networking, building robots, artificial intelligence, and wireless thermal imaging. Carlandra Harris, a biomedical engineering major at Alabama State University, found a particular interest in computing. "I learned so much from my mentor and how we can use machine learning to predict cloud phases like rain, snow, and drizzle," Carlandra says. Maintaining perspective on how much they've learned is important for interns, according to Earth scientist and mentor Lexie Goldberger. "I like to remind them to compare themselves now to what they knew and what skills they had when they first started the internship," she says. "Neither of my interns had ever coded or knew Python before they started, but now they've completed their analysis. One of them ran their first machine learning model!" ????????
