Transparency, investment, and commitment—not empty promises—will drive zero-emission ocean shipping. ????? In SAFETY4SEA, Pacific Environment’s Jonathan Butler lays out what it will take to reach zero-emission ocean shipping by 2030: ?? Greater industry investment in zero-emission technologies ? Public ship-level emissions data — the @InternationalMaritimeOrganization must stop keeping this information under wraps ? Stronger policies and financial commitments from both shipping companies and major retailers to fund the transition now Retail giants rely on global shipping to move their goods — but without real funding and transparency, the industry will fall short of its climate goals. It’s time for retailers, shippers and policymakers to step up. Retailers are shipping their goods on fossil-fueled ships — at the expense of the communities living near ports, who bear the brunt of toxic pollution. This must change. Retailers and shippers have the power to clean up their supply chains. It’s time for them to step up, invest in zero-emission technologies, and take responsibility for the damage they’ve caused. 关于我们
Pacific Environment empowers communities to protect their well-being and the natural world around them. We get money and expertise to the ground in challenging venues on the Pacific Rim, including China, Russia, and the Alaskan Arctic. By strengthening communities and protecting the environment in such places, we also promote transparency, public participation, and legal enforcement, which form the basis on which people can achieve lasting protection of their health and the environment. Pacific Environment offers one of the very few granting and training programs serving grassroots leaders around the Pacific Rim. At the heart of our long-term commitment to community-led environmental activism is a comprehensive support program. The community leaders and groups we partner with consistently tell us that the value we provide stems from three things: 1) giving them financial and mentoring support; 2) bringing them together in coordinated networks; and 3) supplying much needed expertise for their campaigns (e.g., technical, scientific, legal). Over three decades we have nurtured more than 150 grassroots organizations around the Pacific Rim and provided millions of dollars. In turn, the networks we foster create concentric ripples outward to many more people and organizations that ally together to undertake public education, litigation, media outreach, large-scale advocacy campaigns, and sophisticated policy work. To complement these community efforts, Pacific Environment has developed substantial expertise in global policy venues typically beyond the reach of local leaders. For example, we have obtained one of the few seats available to NGOs at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a U.N. agency that writes the rules for the high seas. We use this seat to advocate for rules that protect marine mammals and indigenous food security, curb greenhouse gas emissions, and protect Arctic waters from the dangers of catastrophic oil spills.

?? Scaling Zero Waste in Da Nang! ??? Earlier today, key advocates and organizations came together to mobilize resources for zero waste implementation in Da Nang, Vietnam! Hosted by the Vietnam Zero Waste Alliance, GAIA Asia Pacific, Pacific Environment-Vietnam, DUSTA, and Building Up Sustainability, this gathering marked a crucial step in advancing sustainable solutions. ?? Why does this matter? Da Nang is setting an example for waste reduction and circular economy models. By investing in zero waste systems, we protect our environment, reduce pollution, and create healthier communities! ?? Let's push for system change! Join the movement and be part of the zero waste future. #GoForZeroWaste #ZeroWasteOurFuture #BreakFreeFromPlastic #ZeroWasteIsEasierDoneTogether #ZeroWasteIsForEveryone

??A Historic Win for Offshore Wind in South Korea! South Korea has taken a monumental step toward clean energy by passing the Special Act on Offshore Wind! This long-awaited legislation removes key barriers, accelerates approvals and ensures community engagement — laying the foundation for a faster, more sustainable energy transition. ??Why This Matters With renewables making up less than 10% of South Korea’s energy mix, offshore wind is critical for energy security, energy transition and climate actions for its National Determined Contribution target — is a country’s climate action plan that details how it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change under the Paris Agreement. However, the sector has long faced regulatory hurdles and permitting delays — until now. Key Features of the Law ? Streamlined permitting = Reducing approval time with Government-led planning ????National & regional coordination = Clearer responsibilities among agencies and local governments ??Community benefits = Support for local job creation and economic revitalization ?? Grid expansion planning = Preparing for large-scale offshore wind integration What's to come? This law would unlock South Korea’s vast offshore wind potential, boost investment in the industry and port infrastructure, and secure clean energy needed for the residents and for green hydrogen, e-ammonia, and e-methanol—all essential for maritime decarbonization. Concerns over environmental damages and the lack of measures for public interest need to be further refined through upcoming enforcement decrees. Pacific Environment contributed to this win by advocating for international shipping regulations at the International Maritime Organization to ensure a massive future demand for large-scale renewable energy. To move this commitment forward, we facilitated discussions in port cities and regions for the sustainable deployment of offshore wind co-existing with the people in the region. ?? Did you know that a total of 14,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions could be avoided each year if container ships at The Northwest Seaport Alliance's major terminals were electrified at dock? Using shore power could also slash toxic emissions from ships idling at our docks — improving air quality and health by reducing cancer risk and other serious effects. ???? Right now, many ships burn fossil fuels while idling at the dock, releasing toxic pollution that disproportionately impacts workers and nearby neighborhoods. By legislating shore power, we could require more ships to plug into clean electricity instead — reducing emissions and protecting public health. ? Rep. Julia Reed, D-Seattle, who introduced a shore power bill this session, said both impacted communities and the shipping industry have high incentives to move away from diesel. "We need both of these partners to kind of work together towards a common goal of creating shore power across Washington state in order to get this to work," she explained. Investing in shore power is a win-win: it improves air quality, cuts climate pollution, and strengthens Washington’s leadership on clean ports. Thank you, Rep. Reed for your support of shore power in Washington state! ?? ?? STOP SCROLLING ?? A new study published in the journal Nature Medicine found the equivalent of an entire standard plastic spoon’s worth of tiny shards of plastic in normal human brain samples. Even more alarming, the amount of plastic found in autopsied brains was 50% higher than brain samples studied in 2016 according to co-lead study author Matthew Campen, Regents’ Professor and professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. “That would mean that our brains today are 99.5% brain and the rest is plastic.” These nanoplastics are the most worrisome plastics for human health, experts say, because the minuscule pieces can take up residence inside individual cells. Plastics love fats so one theory is that plastics are hijacking their way with the fats we eat into organs that really like lipids such as the brain. Experts across areas of study are finding that more plastic production means more plastic pollution, including micro and nano plastic accumulation in the human body. More than half of all plastic ever made has been made since 2002 and production is on track to double by 2040. Study ?? https://lnkd.in/e2NApxgA
