Earlier this month, we marked the completion of the second of three phases of public outreach with CR Associates (CRA) for the City of Ventura's Santa Paula Branch Line Project. The community-based design effort has been bolstered by in-depth engagement process with various neighborhood area councils, a special community-benefit stakeholder group, and local residents.?In Phase 2 of the outreach process, we presented project updates with collaborators Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC), Ventura County Public Works Agency (VCPWA), and Ventura Police Department (VPD). We have put a new feather in our cap assisting the City with the design and maintenance of an ArcGIS Story Map that details the process of design and outreach of the proposed 4.2-mile trail. This “Rails with Trails” project is set to complete design in early 2025 with a project construction deadline at the end of 2026. On October 10th, the Children’s Park Renovation Project received 100% Design Development approval from the Isla Vista Recreation & Park District (IVRPD), giving our project team the green light for the Construction Documentation Phase. We began supporting IVRPD in 2021 with a community-driven design process, which now totals over 10 public meetings and workshops, board presentations, surveys, a project website, and more. Delivering a design that provides a ‘backyard’ for the economically disadvantaged families of Isla Vista and the District a venue for their dynamic nature-based programming for the local youth has given us tremendous purpose and joy. Like many projects funded by grant programs awarded during a time of extreme construction inflation, this project is seeking to close a funding gap so the park can be built to the community-driven vision. We recently supported the District in a grant application for a youth access grant program. If funded, the the grant will help the District reach their goal to renovate the existing building that houses their Exploration Club, a program that takes local disadvantaged youth to natural destinations over 40 weekends a year. With the support of the Ventura Subsection of the Central Coast Section - American Planning Association, California Chapter (APACC), we held our first-ever AICP-accredited talk at our office in collaboration with the Ventura Regional Fire Safe Council (VRFSC) last week. Our Managing Principal & CEO Mike Zielsdorf and VRFSC’s Programs Manager Mason Thurmond co-led a presentation titled "Landscape, Fire, & Fuel Modification: A Hot Topic". In the day-to-day of a landscape architect, we oftentimes run into jurisdictional requirements that compete with one another: the need to preserve heritage oaks and meet shade area minimums to facilitate urban heat island reduction, for example, can conflict with the need to sufficiently reduce fire hazards?(e.g., vegetation) around structures. The talk focused on demystifying fuel modification and fire hazard severity zones (FHSV) while shedding light on how these regulations play out in practice. We believe that these types of interdisciplinary conversations are critical to encouraging more holistic understanding and approaches to tackling our rapidly evolving climate issues. #landscapearchitecture #firesafety #fuelmodification #apa
