The PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship, Inc. (PA Wilds Center) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to integrate conservation and economic development in a way that strengthens and inspires communities in the Pennsylvania Wilds. The Pennsylvania Wilds, one of the state’s 11 official tourism regions, is a large rural area that covers about a quarter of the Commonwealth and is home to about 4 percent of the state’s population. The 12 1/2 –county landscape is known for its two million acres of public land — more than Yellowstone National Park. It also boasts two National Wild & Scenic Rivers, the largest wild elk herd in the Northeast and some of the darkest skies in the country. It has a rich oil and lumber heritage. Tourism currently accounts for about 11 percent of the region’s economy. It is not the only piece of the pie, but it is an important piece, because in addition to the jobs it creates, it also creates amenities that make it easier for our region’s larger employers to attract and retain talent, and improves quality of life for residents. Visitors currently spend an estimated $1.7 billion annually in the Pennsylvania Wilds. Many local partners are involved in the effort to grow nature and heritage tourism in the region as a way to create jobs, diversify local economies, inspire stewardship, improve quality of life. The PA Wilds Center is the coordinating entity among these partners. The Pennsylvania Wilds Planning Team (PWPT) has started its new Pennsylvania Wilds Planning Study update, which will inform the future of the group’s work within the Pennsylvania Wilds region. The firm selected to undertake the project was announced at the PWPT’s most recent meeting. HRG Engineering, based in Centre County, was selected by the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission through a competitive request for proposals (RFP) process as the contracted consultant who will lead the Pennsylvania Wilds Planning Study update over the course of the next several months. Request for Proposals: PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship is seeking proposals from individuals and/or firms with experience in business planning and legal business structures to establish roles of ownership, a common mission, and standards of practice for a new technology platform serving rural landscapes in multiple states. The work will include researching and identifying an appropriate ownership structure, the merchant of record, benefits and disadvantages of a B-Corp versus a non-profit social enterprise, potential investors, platform standards of practice, and a scaling road map rooted in regional wealth building. Four artists have been selected to develop new Pennsylvania Wilds branded designs as part of the inaugural PA Wilds Artisan Collaborative initiative this fall. Ellen Paquette, Julie Mader, Rhianna Speck at Maitri Design Co., and Kelsey Kleiner at OneTen The Studio were chosen through a competitive application process to help kick off the pilot initiative. The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is seeking proposals from organizations, including non-profits, institutions of higher education, and other stakeholders to work in partnership with the ARC Academies & Institutes team to execute the Appalachian Leadership Institute (ALI), a leadership development program for people who live and/or work in Appalachian and are passionate about helping their communities thrive. A few weeks ago, the PA Wilds Center teamed up with Outdoor Recreation Roundtable for the first ever National Leadership Forum on Rural Development. This event brought together 70 national leaders in economic development, outdoor recreation, and conservation to identify shared priorities and core opportunities for rural communities looking to enhance their economies through outdoor recreation. The National Leadership Forum on Rural Development featured a keynote address from Baratunde Thurston, Emmy-nominated host, producer, writer, and public speaker, as well as high-profile discussions with Basil I. Gooden, Ph.D., USDA Under Secretary for Rural Development, I Ling Matthews Thompson, CEO of the Foundation for America's Public Lands, Marc Berejka, Divisional Vice President at REI Co-op, Glenn Hughes, President at American Sportfishing Association, and many others to discuss the current state of rural America, key development opportunities to tap into, and lessons from effective communities from around the country to demonstrate how outdoor recreation and rural economies can thrive together.
