One of my 2024 highlights was being invited by the United Nations UNDP SDG Local Action to present at a meeting co-convened a few weeks ago with the Diputació de Barcelona showcasing the ways cities are innovating to respond to emerging challenges. The two-day summit included several projects funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge. Representatives from cities located in 30+ countries presented on, among other topics: ·?????#Bogota ’s investments to take care of non-remunerated care-givers in “manzanas de cuidado” (or “care blocks”) - Angela Portela ·?????The role of public development corporations to promote inclusive growth in American cities - Matthew Kwatinetz ·?????#Malacca ’s Green Public Procurement standards - Rozaidi Mahat ·?????Ensuring that local entrepreneurs benefit from development “booms” in Dominican Republic’s small coastal towns - #LasTerrenas Mayor Eduardo E. Polanco ·?????Providing affordable housing and addressing traffic congestion in #Kampala - Dave Khayangayanga ·?????Processing and visualizing urban data to address emerging and future city needs in #Prague - Petr Suska ·?????#Barcelona ’s challenges and successes governing “the urban commons” inclusively, as shown by the city’s people-centered, car-free “super-blocks” (or “superilles”) - ?Cristina Garrido My presentation focused on how the City of Chicago and Elevated Chicago ETOD are using equitable transit-oriented development (#ETOD) to combat and reverse two root causes of resident displacement --gentrification and disinvestment--. To explain how Chicago moved from TOD to ETOD, I used the Center For Community Investment Capital Absorption Framework, and featured the work of our local ETOD developers P3 Markets and Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation.
