关于我们
P&C Construction was established in 1961 and is currently celebrating its 60th anniversary as a general contractor locally owned and operated in Portland, Oregon. The name P&C is a nod to our company founders, Ray Pettyjohn and Don Campbell, who wanted to start a general contracting business that put quality and interpersonal relationships above everything else. As they liked to say at the time, “If a client wants a screen door hung...we’ll go hang it!” In other words: no job was too small, no task too insignificant. They sincerely believed that honest collaboration and oversight would set their company apart and we’re proud to say that the standards for integrity they established in 1961 remain in effect today. We specialize in commercial construction projects for the public and private sector. Key markets include civic and community facilities, healthcare, education, historic renovation, and athletics. Our team excels at value engineering, sustainable construction, seismic upgrades, and complex logistical planning. P&C has the ability to self-perform selective demolition, concrete work, wood framing, wood siding and trim, interior finish carpentry, miscellaneous steel erection, door & hardware installation, and division 10/11/12 installation.

On Monday, November 18th, P&C and our project partners (InkBuilt, the City of Beaverton and Washington County) celebrated the grand opening of the City’s first year-round shelter. Once a former furniture store located off Beaverton Hillsdale Highway, the shelter features gentle lighting, soft colors, natural wood finishes, a beautiful mural by local artist Damon Smyth and a young Norfolk Island pine that stands in a sun-filled spot in the center of the lobby. Other features include outdoor seating, a dedicated dog run, a kitchen, laundry facilities, private sleeping areas, offices and a sensory overload room for decompressing. Governor Tina Kotek made a surprise appearance at the celebration, saying, “I am constantly inspired by the sense of urgency that local communities are bringing to the issue and you see that here in Beaverton. Communities across the state — like Beaverton, like Washington County — step up every single day to be part of the solution.” We’re very proud to have worked with this team to bring crucial services like this to our community!

After majoring in Building Construction at Benson High School, Brad Esler graduated in 1984. Just a few short months later, he began his carpenter apprenticeship looking for work at a time when the construction industry was especially slow. P&C Construction had a superintendent on staff who had worked with Brad’s father at a different general contractor throughout the 60’s and 70’s. He recommended that Brad go and talk to Dale Campbell (son of Don, co-founder of the company) to see if P&C had any work for a firm term carpenter. Dale’s initial response was, “I’ll see what we have. Come see me in a week….” That night Brad came home to his father who advised him to show up the next morning anyway, ready to work. “Be there at 7am every single day,” he said, “Until they hire you.” After several morning trips, Dale finally relinquished and said, “Okay, I think I might have a couple of weeks’ worth of work for you.” Forty years later and Brad remains one of P&C’s most accomplished Superintendents. His resume boasts the building and renovating of just every type of facility you can think up. From police and fire facilities, K-12 School buildings, commercial buildings and everything in between, he’s seen and experienced just about anything a jobsite can produce. This anniversary speaks to a remarkable career filled with dedication, expertise and loyalty - qualities that Brad has embodied every day on the job. His commitment to excellence has left a lasting impression on not just every project he’s completed, but every person he’s worked with (clients, architects, teachers, police officers, firefighters, librarians…the list goes on!). Brad has truly set the standard in his role as Superintendent and we’re confident that his legacy is one that will be felt for generations to come. Cheers to Brad on 40 years!

Continuing our celebration of P&C’s participation in the ASC Student Competition, we spoke to Sr. Project Manager Parker Verhaeghe about his experiences overseeing the program. “Being a mentor for the Reno Class & Competition (known as ‘Reno’) is as rewarding to me today as it was in 2007 when I participated as an OSU CEM (construction engineering management) student. What makes this program unique is the way it gives students an opportunity to utilize everything they’ve learned. And even though it’s very challenging, I've never heard a student say it wasn't one of the best practical learning experiences they've ever had. Overall, the program gives you back exactly what you put into it and over the last decade it’s helped me develop as a leader. I’ve worked with over sixty (60) students across ten (10) teams and it’s taught me a lot about how to thoughtfully guide teams of students with endless combinations of strengths, weaknesses, experiences and personalities. I've grown to really appreciate the challenges of "teaching/instructing" within the education system(s) and best of all, I get to see the student's excitement and determination year after year as they each prepare for their competitions. Best of all, it's a lot of fun! When we’re not completely overwhelmed, we’re joking around, laughing, having a great time. This is a seminal time in these student’s lives; they’re excited to make their own path through life. One of the greatest rewards I get from being involved is bumping into past Reno students in the real world of construction and getting to hear where and how far they’ve come. It’s great to be reminded how fast our lives can pass us by if we don’t take the time to appreciate experiences like this. It feels like only yesterday I was in their shoes…in reality it’s been fifteen (15) years!”

This week, October 14 to 18, 2024, is Construction Inclusion Week, which is designed to build awareness for the need to improve diversity and inclusion in the construction industry by providing content and resources.?This initiative is not just about raising awareness; it's about providing practical content and actionable resources to advance inclusion. By highlighting the importance of diversity and inclusion, we drive improvements within our organizations, elevate our projects, and inspire a new standard of excellence and innovation industry wide. To celebrate, we held an event at our Concord/Oak Lodge to tour the site, watch the installation of the dowel-laminated timber (DLT) roof system, have lunch and review our “Five Pillars of Belonging.” P&C’s values are “the people, the experience and the craftsmanship.” Each of these tenets are held together by a true sense of belonging and camaraderie between our community of managers, planners, designers and builders. It’s also a crucial aspect of our company culture, supporting each other through the lifespan of each project. By promoting the five pillars and staying true to their message, we can collectively reach a level of success that cannot be measured by time or money.

Very proud that this October marks the tenth anniversary of P&C’s participation in the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Annual Student Construction Competition in Reno, Nevada! Since 2015, Senior Project Manager, Parker Verhaeghe has been coaching and preparing the Commercial Division Team from the Oregon State University’s Construction Engineering Management (CEM) Program to compete against nineteen (19) other colleges in Oregon, Washington, California and Hawaii. Having graduated from OSU himself in 2007, Parker has made coaching these teams an integral part of P&C’s larger mentor/internship program, helping to usher in the next generation of builders and managers. Now joined by Hunter Karnopp (another OSU alumni), Parker and his team kicked things off last week to review objectives, go over expectations and provide an overview of the entire experience. To celebrate ten years, we’ll be posting lots more about how this competition unfolds over four months, what it means to our firm and to the students who have participated – stay tuned!

Construction Engineering Management, Business Management Student at Oregon State University | Sigma Chi | P&C Construction Summer Intern
It’s very bittersweet to announce my internship with P&C Construction this summer has come to a close. I would first like to thank Parker Verhaeghe and Hunter Karnopp for the amazing experience, and for the countless oppurtnuities I have had this summer to build myself as a worker in the construction industry and as a better person in general. This summer, I worked alongside Hunter and the team at Oak Lodge working on a 16,000 sqft ground up Library. I gained invaluable experience helping with RFI’s, submittals, contracts, change orders, as well as numerous other tasks. I also got the opportunity to get outside and help the foreman with tasks such as etching and chalking grid lines for subcontractors. Once again, I’m super grateful for the knowledge I have learned in the CEM industry and I can’t wait to use what I’ve learned in my future endeavors and career!
